Mangalore, October 23: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former Kasaragod MP T Govind on Sunday breathed his last at a private hospital in the city. He was 73.
Born on January 11, 1940, as the eldest son of Raman Panikkar and Chemmarathi couple in Payyanur, Govind had formally entered the CPI as a member in 1963. The very next year he became the member of CPI (M).
Recognising his commitment, the party had appointed him as Kannur district secretary for the year 1989-90.
He entered the 11th Lok Sabha after winning Kasaragod constituency for the first time in 1996 parliamentary polls. He also was re-elected for the next two consecutive parliamentary elections held in 1998 and 1999 from the same constituency.
He was admitted to a hospital in Payyanur a few days ago with chronic-age-related illnesses. When his health condition continued to deteriorate, he was shifted to a private hospital in Mangalore a couple of days ago for advanced treatment. However, around 12:00 pm, the end came.
He is survived by his wife, three children and a large number of family members, relatives, friends and well-wishers.
Family sources said that the final rites would be carried out on Monday at his hometown Payyanur.
