Mangalore, October 29: Taking a dig at former deputy prime minister L K Advani's Jan Chetana Yatra, which is supposed to entre Karnataka Sunday, Congress veteran B Janardhan Poojary questioned the moral right of the octogenarian leader to hold an anti-corruption rally, when many senior BJP leaders in the state are involved in mega scandals.

Addressing a press meet here on Sunday, former KPCC president dared Mr Advani to demand the resignation of Home Minister R Ashoka, who is facing land grabbing charges, and sack former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who is remanded in judicial custody, from the party, if he has any morality.

Coming down heavily on rath yatra habit of Mr Advani, he dubbed the Jana Chetana Yatra as mere a drama.

Recalling the violent and hateful history of BJP stalwart's previous rath yatras, Mr Poojary said that once he had launched a rath yatra with a pledge to build Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Their mission ended up in demolition of Babri Masjid, but, their pledge of temple construction remained unfulfilled even today, he said.

“Now, you pledge to fight against corruption through Jan Chetana Yatra. But, do you really have the moral right to rally against corruption?”, Mr Poojary quested the BJP leader in his typical way.

Reminding that corruption in BJP is not confined to Karnataka, he said, when Mr Advani was the home minister of India, then BJP national president Bangaru Laxman was caught red hand while receiving bribe. Moreover leaders like George Fernandes and Jaya Jaitley were also in the list of corrupt politicians. “Had you taken any action on those leaders when you were in the power at the Centre,” Mr Pooajary asked the former Dy PM.

Satirising Mr Advani's slogans against corruption and his harsh remarks against Congress government, Mr Poojary said that he should not forget that he is sitting in the glass house. “Have your questioned yourself before blaming others?” he asked.

He also recalled that Mr Advani himself had refused to step down from the power as home minister of Indian, when a charge sheet was filed against him.

Turning his ire at RSS, he questioned what action has been taken against the outfit, which was apparently involved in terrorism in the country and is accused in many blast cases including Hyderabad, Malegaon and Pune?

“After all your Yatra will entre Mangalore, where minorities have been repeatedly targeted by hardliners. Here Christians were targeted and their places of worship were attacked,” he said.

He also exhorted Adavni to reject the controversial report submitted by Justice B K Somashekara Commission of Inquiry, appointed by the BJP government to probe into the attacks on churches in Karnataka in 2008. The commission had given a clean chit to BJP and Sangh parivar outfits.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the Hindu Religious Endowment Department to submit a proposal for constructing a gold chariot for the presiding deity of the state, Chamundeshwari, official sources said on Monday.

The directive follows a request from Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dinesh Gooligowda, who highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, which dates back to the 12th century AD.

Gooligowda noted that the existing wooden chariot, donated by devotees from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has deteriorated over time.

“Devotees have expressed their desire to organise a ‘rathotsava’ using a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari. This proposal has been under consideration for some time, with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore,” the MLC said.

He emphasised that the government’s financial involvement would not be required, as devotees are willing to contribute towards making the chariot a reality.

Gooligowda proposed a deadline for the 2025 Dasara festival for the completion of the chariot, ensuring it is ready for the grand procession featuring the idol of Chamundeshwari.

Mangaluru: The upcoming assembly session at Suvarna Soudha, Belagavi, scheduled from December 9 to 19, will primarily focus on addressing issues pertaining to North Karnataka, according to Assembly Speaker U T Khader. "While the main emphasis will be on North Karnataka, concerns from other regions will also be part of the discussions," he clarified.

Speaking to reporters at the Circuit House in Mangaluru on Thursday, Khader shared that a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee had been convened, with the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and other key figures in attendance to ensure effective deliberations during the session.

"The session was initially planned from December 9 to 20. However, it was later decided to conclude it by December 19, as the All India Kannada Literary Convention is set to begin on December 20 in Mandya," Khader explained.

When asked about the process for discussions in the Assembly, Khader assured, "Discussions will take place according to the established rules."

The Speaker also highlighted his participation in various international conferences. "As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, I have consistently sought opportunities to represent the Assembly at overseas conventions. I am pleased to announce that I will be attending the International Peace Conference in Vatican City," he said. "It is an honor to participate as a representative of the Mangaluru constituency and as the Speaker of the Assembly."

In response to questions about government grants, Khader remarked, "Grants do not come automatically. MLAs must actively follow up with the relevant authorities rather than simply complain about the lack of grants in their constituencies."

Addressing the tragic incident of three students drowning at a resort in Ullal, the Speaker emphasized, "The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to enforce strict safety measures in resorts to prevent such incidents in the future."

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.
