Mangalore, October 31: When Total Sanitation Campaign picked up in Dakshina Kannada district, all the gram panchayats plunged into making the campaign success by winning the award at the national-level and many Gram Panchayats decided to construct plastic soudha to dump the plastic covers and to give way for its re use or use it for productive purpose like laying of roads.

The district had come out with several models related to cleanliness and had also won several awards at the State and national-level. Unfortunately, plastic soudha is not serving the purpose for which it was constructed in many places. It is observed that in most of the GPs, the activities on the lines of total sanitation have died down after the awards came. The passiveness in the villagers which had once became active due to the campaign only point at the fact that the enthusiastic activities were all temporary and lacked vision.

Here is a classic example for lack of use of plastic soudha at Asaigoli in Konaje Gram Panchayat.

The Gram Panchayat had won Nirmal Gram Puraskar from the President of India few years ago. However, the surrounding of the platsic soudha speaks otherwise.

“The plastic soudha should be utilised effectievly for dumping the plastic covers. However, in Asaigoli, the Soudha is used for dumping the plastic covers filled with waste. The plastic bags containing all types of waste stuffed in them tightly closed are dumped outside the soudha.

This is the most unscientific manner to dispose the plastic. The Panchayat authorities should dispose the plastic from the soudha atleast once in a week. There is a need to create awareness among the locals on the use of plastic soudha and request them not to throw the waste filled with plastic around the Soudha,” said Dr B K Sarojini, a resident of Asaigoli.

Another shopkeeper said “plastic has littered everywhere including our tourist places, water bodies and drains. We have created a culture, which is perpetually dependent on plastic. Normally, the thrown plastic flies high and gets stuck in an ugly form even on trees and bushes.”

Another rickshaw driver said that it is the responsibility of the Gram Panchayat to clear the waste dumped outside the Plastic Soudha.

Jana Shikshana Trust Director Sheena Shetty said “the plastic soudha was constructed to dump the plastic covers and reuse the plastic. It should have been a plastic control centre. Unfortunately, it is not used effectively for the purpose which it should have been used. Many of the Plastic Soudhas are not serving the purpose for which it was constructed. There is no one to maintain the soudha. Without the basic concept, many Gram Panchayats have constructed the soudha.”

“The Soudha has become new form of dustbin. Instead of constructing plastic soudha, the waste should be segregated at the source and the individual houses and shops should maintain it. There is a need to educate the public on reuse of plastic. Before the construction of plastic soudha at Asaigoli, no wastes were dumped at the place where soudha has come up.”

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta recently met with Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnav to discuss urgent concerns regarding the region's railway infrastructure development. Key issues raised during the meeting included the long-pending Mangaluru-Bengaluru connectivity, the Shiradi Ghat stretch, and other vital railway concerns impacting the region.

In addition to discussing these issues, Captain Chowta submitted a letter requesting the Union Minister's intervention and support. The letter emphasized the need to merge Konkan Railway with Indian Railways and called for the doubling of railway tracks between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, which would significantly improve rail connectivity between the state capital and Mangaluru.

Further, Captain Chowta raised concerns about enhancing passenger facilities along the region's rail routes, particularly the need for better services between Subrahmanya and Mangaluru.

To bring more attention to these pressing issues, Captain Chowta took to social media, urging the state government’s support. In a tweet on his official X handle, he requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to expedite the resolution of these concerns. “In this direction, I request our Karnataka government led by CM Shri @siddaramaiah to kindly provide the necessary state support for the swift redressal of various concerns pertaining to both Konkan Railways as well as HMRDC to ease movement of both people and cargo in this important stretch between Mangalore and Bangalore,” he posted.

The meeting with the Union Minister was attended by Bengaluru Rural MP Dr. CN Manjunath, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Kota Srinivas Poojary, and Uttara Karnataka MP Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, all of whom supported the discussion on enhancing railway infrastructure in the region.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.

Mangaluru: The upcoming assembly session at Suvarna Soudha, Belagavi, scheduled from December 9 to 19, will primarily focus on addressing issues pertaining to North Karnataka, according to Assembly Speaker U T Khader. "While the main emphasis will be on North Karnataka, concerns from other regions will also be part of the discussions," he clarified.

Speaking to reporters at the Circuit House in Mangaluru on Thursday, Khader shared that a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee had been convened, with the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and other key figures in attendance to ensure effective deliberations during the session.

"The session was initially planned from December 9 to 20. However, it was later decided to conclude it by December 19, as the All India Kannada Literary Convention is set to begin on December 20 in Mandya," Khader explained.

When asked about the process for discussions in the Assembly, Khader assured, "Discussions will take place according to the established rules."

The Speaker also highlighted his participation in various international conferences. "As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, I have consistently sought opportunities to represent the Assembly at overseas conventions. I am pleased to announce that I will be attending the International Peace Conference in Vatican City," he said. "It is an honor to participate as a representative of the Mangaluru constituency and as the Speaker of the Assembly."

In response to questions about government grants, Khader remarked, "Grants do not come automatically. MLAs must actively follow up with the relevant authorities rather than simply complain about the lack of grants in their constituencies."

Addressing the tragic incident of three students drowning at a resort in Ullal, the Speaker emphasized, "The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to enforce strict safety measures in resorts to prevent such incidents in the future."
