Mangalore, November 2: A section of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee, which planned to organise 'shuddheekarana kaarya' (cleansing) of the road in the city on which BJP leader L K Advani's Jan Chetana Yatra passed on October 31, shelved the programme at the 11th hour allegedly because of opposition within the party.
The party workers were planning to hold the "shuddheekarana kaarya" by cleaning road between A B Shetty Circle and Clock Tower Circle using water brought in tankers at 4 pm. The message of holding the programme was sent to most of the journalists in the city in the morning itself. However, same party worker, who sent the message, informed journalists about an hour before the scheduled time that the programme has been cancelled.
Meanwhile, district congress committee vice-president Ivan D'Souza put the blame on police and said that programme could not be organised as police denied permission on a public holiday. "We will organise the programme at another convenient date after obtaining permission from the police," he added.
However, city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh denied this saying that police were ready to arrange security for the party workers to carry out the programme. "We did not deny permission for them to hold protest," he asserted.
