Mangalore, November 15: Former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punaroor, was on Tuesday conferred with 'Pingara Rajyotsava Award-2011' in a ceremonious function organised at Town Hall in the city.

Accepting the award Mr Punaroor expressed his gratitude to the Pingara publication and jury. “I am happy that I am recognised for my service and got this award without any lobby. I am lucky to act according to what great men have spoken”, he said.

Recalling the incidents of his life one by one, he said: “Once, while traveling by train I was asked as to why I didn't travel by air condition compartment. I answered that it was because the train would reach at the same time for all bogies”

“I have struggled a lot for poor. Even though I got sanctioned 2 cents of land for the poor, today some other residents are living in that piece of land. Anyways it is important for everyone to give something back to the society and that is what I pray god for”, he said.

Introducing the award winner, Dr Mohan Alva, Chairman, Alva's Education Foundation, Moodbidri, called him a model for the society. “At the early stage of his life Punaroor got into the hotel business after completing Standard X. He then formed an association of hoteliers and became its president. He slowly began thinking about the society and what he could do to uplift the poor. He began by providing clothes to the poor and today he can proudly say that he is able to provide shelter to the poor. He also involved himself in organising cataract surgery to the poor patients. Recently, he was able to convince the government that poor must get 5 cents of land instead of 2 cents,” said Mr Alva.

In his welcome address, Raymond D Cunha, Editor of the 'Pingara' weekly, which instituted the award, said that the philanthropic streak of Mr Punaroor helped him bagged the award.

Explaining the motive behind instituting such an award Mr D'Cunha said when he was working as a reporter he wanted to do something for the society and thus began thinking about recognition of great people who contribute to our society. “Today this idea has shaped itself as an award ceremony”, he added.

He also said that it was very difficult to choose this year's awardee and there were around 20 entrants.

A jury, headed by chief of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan Roy Castelino, had chosen the mane of Punaroor among 20 applications received by the Kannada weekly newspaper. The other members of the jury were Davanand Jain, CG Pinto ,Dr Mohan Alva, Walter Nadalike, Fr William and others.

Mr Punaroor was chosen for this annual award on the basis of his contribution and service to society over a period of 40 years. The award included a citation, shall, garland, memento and fruit basket.

Bengaluru: The Janata Dal (Secular) is grappling with its most tumultuous political crisis yet, with speculation rife about imminent defections among its lawmakers. This storm comes in the aftermath of party scion Nikhil Kumaraswamy's humiliating defeat in the Channapatna bypoll—his third consecutive electoral loss after setbacks in Mandya (2019) and Ramanagara (2023). With the regional party’s Assembly tally shrinking to 18 from 19, questions are being raised about its survival.

The murmurs of rebellion were amplified on Monday when Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Congress MLA CP Yogeshwar openly hinted at possible desertions within the JD(S) ranks. Yogeshwar, newly elected from Channapatna, declared he could orchestrate a migration of JD(S) MLAs to Congress. “I’ll meet them at the Belagavi session. Within a month, they’ll be in Congress,” he confidently stated during a televised interview. Yogeshwar has a history of engineering defections, having played a pivotal role in the collapse of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in 2019 during his stint with the BJP.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, not mincing words, slammed the JD(S) leadership for fostering "self-serving politics," criticizing the HD Deve Gowda family for failing to nurture party talent. “There’s no trust. Their MLAs will seek survival—either in BJP or Congress,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the expelled JD(S) state president CM Ibrahim added fuel to the fire by claiming that 12-13 MLAs are "disillusioned" with the current leadership. Speculations around senior JD(S) leader GT Deve Gowda joining Congress have also intensified. DK Shivakumar, Karnataka’s Deputy CM and Congress president, described GT Deve Gowda as a “valuable leader” who might be frustrated with the party’s internal dynamics.

While Congress leaders seem eager to poach JD(S) legislators, the BJP is not far behind in targeting the floundering party. The situation signals a decisive moment for the JD(S), as its survival now hinges on how it manages this brewing storm of discontent.

Udupi: Six junior artists from the prequel of Kannada blockbuster film ‘Kantara’ were injured, when the bus they were travelling in overturned in the district, police said on Monday.

According to police, the accident occurred near Jadkal on Sunday night when the mini-bus carrying the crew of the film overturned.

“The incident happened while they were returning to Kollur after completing the shoot at Mudoor in Jadkal. The mini-bus was carrying 20 junior artistes when it met with the accident,” a police officer said.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Jadkal and Kundapur for treatment, they said.

The Kollur police are investigating the matter.

"The news making rounds is completely false. The Kantara: Chapter 1 team began shooting at 06:00 AM today, and everything is proceeding as normal. A minor accident occurred 20 kilometres away from the shooting location, involving a local bus carrying some members of the Kantara team. However, no injuries were reported," a source close to the production said.

Mangaluru: The upcoming assembly session at Suvarna Soudha, Belagavi, scheduled from December 9 to 19, will primarily focus on addressing issues pertaining to North Karnataka, according to Assembly Speaker U T Khader. "While the main emphasis will be on North Karnataka, concerns from other regions will also be part of the discussions," he clarified.

Speaking to reporters at the Circuit House in Mangaluru on Thursday, Khader shared that a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee had been convened, with the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and other key figures in attendance to ensure effective deliberations during the session.

"The session was initially planned from December 9 to 20. However, it was later decided to conclude it by December 19, as the All India Kannada Literary Convention is set to begin on December 20 in Mandya," Khader explained.

When asked about the process for discussions in the Assembly, Khader assured, "Discussions will take place according to the established rules."

The Speaker also highlighted his participation in various international conferences. "As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, I have consistently sought opportunities to represent the Assembly at overseas conventions. I am pleased to announce that I will be attending the International Peace Conference in Vatican City," he said. "It is an honor to participate as a representative of the Mangaluru constituency and as the Speaker of the Assembly."

In response to questions about government grants, Khader remarked, "Grants do not come automatically. MLAs must actively follow up with the relevant authorities rather than simply complain about the lack of grants in their constituencies."

Addressing the tragic incident of three students drowning at a resort in Ullal, the Speaker emphasized, "The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to enforce strict safety measures in resorts to prevent such incidents in the future."
