Mangalore, November 23: A teenage student was hospitalised on Tuesday after he was allegedly subjected to the corporal punishment by the teacher of a private high school in Harekala on the outskirts of the city.
The victim is Mohammed Azharuddin (16), son of Hasanabba, a resident of Harekala village. He is a class X student of Sri Ramakrishna High School.
The student, who is currently undergoing treatment at Yenepoya Hospital in Deralakatte, has accused his teacher Vasantha Kumar of beating him severely with a bamboo stick and kicking him.
It is said that the incident occurred after Azharuddin and his fellow team members were celebrating the victory in a kabaddi match against another team in the same school. A boy of the same team, who was lifted by Azharuddin and others for his good performance in the match, suddenly fell down. On seeing this Kumar allegedly beat up Azharuddin and also kicked him after taking him inside the school from ground.
The boy has sustained injuries on his head and face after being assaulted by his teacher.
Meanwhile, Kumar has justified the assault against the boy. “I know that law prohibits us from beating a student. However, sometimes it becomes inevitable to beat students to control them”, he said.
Azharuddin has filed a complaint with Konaje police station. While contacted, police said that the case is being considered as non-cognizable offence.
