Mulky, November 24: Unidentified thieves broke into two jewellery shops on Pandit Hari Bhatt road in Haleyangadi near here, and made away with gold and silver worth around Rs 20 lakhs.
The burglary came to light early on Thursday morning. Mulky police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Sniffer dogs were press into action and finger print experts too were called in as part of investigation.
The thieves in the dark targeted Sri Durga Jewellers belonging to one Surya Kumar and Padmashree Jewellers owned by one Karunakar Acharya. Both shops are located a few meters away from Haleyangadi town.
It is assumed that the burglary might have occurred in the wee hours of Thursday, as the Mulky police were on patrol in the area till 1:30 am.
A gorkha, who first noticed the broken shutters of the jewellery shops informed a localite, who then called jurisdictional Mulky Police Station and owner.
The owner of Durga jewellers claimed that thieves have taken away 20 kgs of silver and two gold chains, while, Padmashree Jewellery shop's owner in his complaint said that he lost around 2kg of silver ornaments.
Police and local people have suspected that it might be the act of professional thieves.
