Mangalore, November 29: Condemning attacks on doctors, paramedical staff and hospitals, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday took out a peaceful protest march in the city.
Over a hundred protesters including doctors, paramedical staff and medical students took part in the rally, which commenced at 11 am at Light House Hill Road and culminated at the Office of Deputy Commissioner.
As per the request of the IMA, most of the hospitals in the city closed their Out Patient Department clinics for a day, but attend to emergencies and in patients.
The main demands of the protesters include that the State must punish the perpetrators of violence against doctors, paramedical staff and hospitals arresting them under non-bailable warrants with three years imprisonment; imposing fine of Rs 50,000 and fine amount of twice the value of the hospital property damaged.
A memorandum addressed to Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda was submitted to Deputy Commissioner by the protesters.
IMA Mangalore branch President Manjunath Shenoy, Joint Secretary Animesh Jain, Treasurer Siddarth M Shetty, and Mohandas Bhandary were present among the protesters.
