Mangalore, December 3: Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes visited the Bhagini Samaj Ashram, the home for the underprivileged children and orphans in the city on Saturday. He was accompanied by noted dance guru and choreographer Dharmesh Sir from Mumbai.
Dharmesh , who is in the city to participate in a dance show also showed interest in interacting with the children of the Ashram. Mr Fernandes had a pleasant look on his face when he was greeted by the 34 children of the Ashram who were seated on the floor waiting for him in a disciplined manner.
On his arrival Mr Fernandes was welcomed with a devotional song by the children.
He interacted with the children about their stay at the Ashram and asked them if they were enjoying it.
Speaking to media persons Mr Fernandes pledged to donate the money to the Ashram from the MP's fund, since it is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012. Already around Rs 10 lakh has been spent on various repair works including the flooring of the ashram, he said.
He reconfirmed that for the 75th anniversary his party would participate actively in providing the necessary cooperation for the development of the ashram.
He also said that these kinds of ashrams remind us that humanity is still alive and one must spread love and compassion amongst the underprivileged. This is a yeoman service being done by the Bhagini Samaj, he said.
He also distributed fruits like apples and oranges.
The dance guru too felt a unique bond with the children. Expressing his feelings he said, “Every time I come here it is a unique experience and I feel a special connection with these children. When I have enough money I wish to open an ashram of this nature for such children. If I had planned earlier I would have brought some gifts for the children”, he said.
The warden of the ashram, Pushpalatha was happy about the visit and said, “We need donations for some repair work and also to celebrate 75th anniversary.”
