Mangalore, December 15: A three day sports meet of Western Range Home Guards is underway at district police grounds in the city.
A total of 12 events have been arranged as part of the sports meet organised by Mangalore City Commissionerate in association with Dakshina Kannada district police.
Game like Tug of War, Kabbaddi, Volleyball, Track events are included in the sports meet, in which four districts - Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chikmaglur and Udupi are participating.
The meet was inaugurated by Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr NS Channappa Gowda. The meet began with an inaugural parade by all participants. The DC took the salute and accepted the oath taking which was done by parade Commander Venkatesh. Later the DC let off pigeons and declared the meet open.
District Commandant of Home Guards, Prof Dr Nidarsh Hegde welcomed the gathering and also introduced the events to the crowd. He said, “There are lots of changes in Dakshina Kannada. Home guards are the second line of defence. They are posted at RTOs, Tourism spots, KSRTC, Temples and 17 units around Dakshina Kannada”.
He said that 35 sports persons who perform brilliantly in this sports meet would be selected for the state level meet.
Speaking on the occasion he said the main goal of any games must be participation. Sports have no boundaries of caste, religion or profession. It is good to see all of you participate and let the three days be fruitful, he said.
