Mangalore, December 15: A broad daylight robbery at an ATM here led to the quick apprehension of four accused by local law enforcement.
The robbers who gained entry into the ATM located adjacent to KMC College at Milagres area had made away with bags containing over Rs 30 lakh at around 12:30 pm.
According to local sources, the robbers had fled the scene in a four wheeler. However, the city police who took timely action to trace down the robbers, who had boarded a city bus after travelling a little distance in the car.
According to preliminary sources, the robbery occurred when money bags were brought in a car to deposit. The miscreants, who managed to divert the attention of car driver and security personnel by placing few currency notes in front of the car, made away with the bags containing money.
However, the city police, who launched an emergency operation succeeded to nab at least four persons within a few minutes after the incident.
Protest
The emergency operation by the police led to traffic jam near Pumpwell circle, as a few bus drivers staged protest.
The city bus drivers and conductors staged protest against police after a city bus driver was allegedly beaten by a policeman for not allowing Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemnath Kuamar's vehicle to move ahead near the circle. The Commissioner was in a hurry to visit the spot where the suspected robbers were caught.
It is said that police took custody of Madhu, the driver of a city bus named 'Suvarna' which was moving towards Addyar from State Bank bus terminus. A constable on condition of anonymity said that police took action against the driver for not allowing the Commissioner's jeep to move forward.
However, Nagesh the conductor of Suvarna bus has accused the police of beating Madhu after dragging him from the driver seat.
