The Commissioner of Police told media persons that today's achievement of the city police has bagged appreciation of the Director General of Police, who immediately announced Rs 20 thousand cash award to the police team, which participated in the operation. “Besides this, I am announcing Rs 10 thousand award on behalf of Commissionerate”, he said.
Mr Singh said that due to the timely action, police were able to nab four accused within a few minutes after a cash container was robbed in the broad day light. He gave the name of arrested as Murali, Shridhar, Hariharan and Manindran, all hailing from different places in Tamil Nadu.
He said that city police would get in touch with Tamil Nadu police and find out more about the culprits, and also hand them over for further investigation.
The Commissioner said that police found the accused with cash container on board a KSRTC bus, bearing registration number KA 19 F 2822, which was bond to Puttur. “When the police waylaid the bus near Kannur Mosque at Adyar, the accused tried to escape. However, the public helped the police to chase down the robbers”, he said adding that city police would honour those individuals from the public for helping to nab the accused.
Giving details about the incident, the Divisional Manager of State Bank of India, Raghuram Shetty, said that the security lapse on part of the Pro Interact Agency, which bears the responsibility of depositing the money in ATM gave an opportunity for robbers, though they were caught later.
He said that there was only one gunman inside the ATM located adjacent to KMC College at Hampankatta, along with the person depositing the cash.
“At around 12:15 pm, when the cash was brought in a four wheeler to deposit at the ATM, the robbers diverted the attention driver of the by throwing a few currency notes of Rs 10. At this time the gunman was inside the ATM along with the official who was depositing the cash. Suddenly the robbers grabbed a cash box which had Rs 25 lakhs cash stored in it. They fled the scene and boarded a KSRTC bus”, he said.
