Mangalore, December 16: A heartfelt tribute was paid to the martyrs during 'Vijay Diwas' commemorating India's victory over Pakistan in December 16, 1971 Indo-Pak war at War Memorial of Kadri Park on Friday.
In a meaningful programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Ex Servicemen Association to honour the soldiers who laid down their lives while on duty, the dignitaries including NCC Cadets of various colleges.
Nitte University chancellor Dr N Vinaya Hegde, District Home Guards Commandant Dr Nidarsh Hegde Brigadier Ichlampadi Najappa Rai, Retired Colonel Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandary, M B Sadashiv and former president of Association Warrant Officer R K Shetty and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion Brigadier Ichlampadi Najappa Rai lamented people of Mangalore lack the awareness of armed men and their sacrifice. He also unraveled his own experience during the war.
Air Vice-Marshal K Ramesh Karnik felt that there should motive to present generation to join armed forces.
He appreciated the Indian military force for its commendable job in protecting the nation and assured of working towards the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen.
It could be recalled that Vijay Diwas is observed to mark the India's military victory over its rival Pakistan achieved in 1971, drawing an end to the nine month long Bangla Liberation War.
A large number of ex-servicemen from Dakshina Kannada were present. Colonel Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandary welcomed the gathered.
