Colourful 'Kudla Kala mela' at Kadri park

December 18, 2011

Mangalore, December 19: ''I have not come here with any expectations that my paintings would be sold in a day's time. I do not mind if I fail to sell even a single piece of painting. I have come here and displayed my art piece with an intention to create awareness and interest in paintings among the Mangaloreans,'' said young and energetic artist from Mangalore Navin Kodikal.

A self taught artist and clay model maker by profession, Navin usually paints portraying the culture and tradition of Tulunadu, for the first time he exhibited his paintings in public on Sunday.

It is not just Navin, but there were several such budding artists who got an opportunity to display their art works and sell it to the art connoisseurs at Kudla Kala Mela organised by Karavali Chitra Kalavidara Chavadi for the third time in Mangalore on Sunday. Kadri Park was abuzz with activities. A large number of people had gathered to witness Kudla Kala Mela, a replica of famous 'Chitra Santhe' of Bangalore.

About 161 stalls by various artists, art galleries and art schools put up on both sides of the road leading to Kadri Park exhibited the paintings and carried away the visitors to virtually a colourful world.

The art lovers who are usually made to visit various art galleries to pick up the painting of their choice got an opportunity to make choices as varieties of paintings were available under one roof.

From traditional Madhubani paintings to contemporary arts, from landscapes to line arts from paper cuts to spot portrait making, every other form of paintings were assembled at Kadri Park as part of the event. Artists from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kasargod, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Davangere, Bangalore, Mysore, Hassan districts and even Andhra Pradesh took part in the Mela.

As many as 27 children from Chitkala Foundation, Hassan who had come all the way from Hassan to partake in the event were the centre of attraction. The students between the age group of eight to 14, proved their talent as they spread colours creating landscapes within 15 to 30 minutes.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, their mentor and the Foundation Head B S Desai said that though landscape is mostly treated as an art for elders, his students proved it wrong.

“Give them a little freedom to paint and teach them the basics, then these children can make everything possible,” he said.

As five of the kids began to paint on 5X10 feet canvas, the audience cheered them for better result.

The outcome of the co-ordinated effort of the five children was a vibrant landscape painting which was completed within six minutes, in the backdrop of a soothing music.

There were at least three artistes in the venue to meet the needs of those who wished to have their own portrait drawn on the spot.

As P R Bhat, an artiste from Udupi, told a little girl that he would draw her sketch within 15 minutes, the tiny girl was all curious.

She sat posing for the portrait, was all glee when she saw the picture which was exactly like her. Artistes Sayed Asfal, Lakshminarayana were also working on the portrait at the spot.

Hussain from Bangalore taught the children the art work called Sanji which is made by folding and cutting the plain papers artistically. Hussain said that though the art is well-known as Kirigami in Japan, it is less exposed in India.

Having its root in 14th Century, Sanji has never received the prominence it deserved. So I am doing my bit for the last eight years, to revive this dying art form, he said.

Earlier presiding over the inaugural function, senior art critic A Eshwaraiah flayed the trend of defining a painting. “Paintings or art works are not to be defined. A painting always tells the experience of an artist and there is no point in trying to find a meaning to an art work,” he said.

He also expressed his concern over the growing number of fake artists who opt for abstract painting and scribble bluntly. It has been the recent negative trend as abstract paintings do not seek any explanations, he said. He urged all the schools to purchase at least one painting each and display it on the school walls, so that the artists are supported in a small way.

Kala Mela was organised in 2007 and 2008 respectively. However, the artists felt that there was lack of response from Mangaloreans this year compared to previous years.

Over 1,500 art works at 161 stalls exhibited at Kudla Kala Mela.

The event is organised in the city after a gap of two years

'Varna Sethu'- landscape arts by children from Hassan was the centre of attraction. Line arts training was held for children in the memory of K K Hebbar.

Hemanth Kumar from Hassan, who is the Limca record holder for painting inside the pen, was a crowd puller in the Mela. Hemanth Kumar, the proprietor of Kumar Arts displayed a few art works, he has created inside the bottles, pens and refills, left the people wonder about his creativity.

Hemanth has so far painted in 2,000 pens, 700 bottles and 100 refills.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.

Udupi: A 53-year-old woman fell victim to a sophisticated online fraud, losing ₹19.7 lakh to scammers posing as officials from telecom companies and the police.

According to the complaint filed by Vidya, the incident began on October 4 when she received a call from an individual claiming to be from Airtel. The caller alleged that a SIM card linked to her Aadhaar was being misused in Mumbai for spam and fraudulent activities. They warned her that all her mobile numbers could be blocked and connected her to a supposed "Sahara police station."

A man identifying himself as Mohan Kumar, an "investigation officer" from the Sahara police station, then contacted Vidya. He alleged that a fraudulent bank account had been opened in her name at an SBI branch in Mumbai. This account, he claimed, was being used for human trafficking and money laundering activities by someone named Vivek Das. He insisted that all her bank accounts needed to be reviewed.

On October 5, the scam escalated when Kumar, posing as a police officer, threatened Vidya with arrest and warned her not to leave her location without his permission. He demanded that she transfer funds from her accounts to specific UPI IDs and bank accounts under the pretext of "reviewing" her finances. Fearing legal consequences, Vidya complied and transferred ₹19.7 lakh in installments between October 16 and November 7.

The fraud came to light only after she realized she had been deceived. A case has been registered at the CEN (Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics) police station, and an investigation is underway.

Public Warning:

  • Beware of unsolicited calls claiming to be from telecom companies, banks, or police stations.
  • Never share sensitive personal or banking details over the phone.
  • Always verify the identity of callers through official channels before taking any action.
  • If in doubt, contact your local police or cybercrime cell immediately.
  • Stay vigilant to avoid falling prey to such scams!

Former minister and ex-MLC C M Ibrahim claimed that he still heads the original JD(S) and asked former prime minister and party supremo H D Deve Gowda to cut ties with the BJP, so that the party can be strengthened again. He also said options are being explored to either strengthen the JD(S) or to float a new regional party.

He was speaking to media persons, in Mysuru, on Monday, after meeting JD(S) MLA and former minister G T Deve Gowda, who has expressed his displeasure that he has been sidelined in the party and the party leaders have indicated his retirement from politics.

He stated, “If Deve Gowda had joined the Congress, during the last Assembly election, he would have been a minister now. We retained him in the JD(S), to strengthen the party. Now, efforts are being made to strangulate Deve Gowda’s political career. I have discussed all matters with Deve Gowda. In two days, I will start a Karnataka state tour and meet some leaders. After that, I will meet Deve Gowda again, and then decide on the further course of action.”

Ibrahim said, “The original JD(S) is ours. I am still its state president. All documents and accounts are in our name. Even now, if Deve Gowda leaves BJP’s company and returns, we will build the JD(S) again”.

“Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy should mend his ways and stop making JD(S) into a family-owned company. The JD(S)’s situation has become hopeless. Its love for the BJP is over. He should understand this,” he said.

“When I was with Kumaraswamy, he spent just Rs 4 crore in Channapatna and won by 20,000 votes. Now, without me, he spent Rs 150 crore and still lost by 25,000 votes. Without Muslims’ support, the JD(S) cannot win a single seat. Now, it is proved that 19 MLAs of the JD(S) won in 2023, because of Muslims,” he added.

Speaking on other options available, Ibrahim said, “We have not yet decided to go with the Congress. We are only considering to establish a third front. Whether it is founding a new regional party, forming a third front, or strengthening the JD(S), will be decided shortly.”

Earlier during the day, before meeting Deve Gowda, Ibrahim had said, that 12 to 13 JD(S) MLAs were dissatisfied with the party, but like Deve Gowda, were enduring pain.

“Now, I have started the task of uniting them. I as the JD(S) state president, it is my responsibility to address our MLAs’ grievances. At present, the JD(S) is on fire and all JD(S) MLAs want to protect their respective constituency. Hence, they have started speaking one by one,” he said.
