Nitte, December 21: In America the research in biofuel has already in progress and people started using some percentage of ethanol mixed in diesel in their vehicles, said Dr. Sairam Rudrabhatla, Professor of Environmental Engineering, PennState University, Harrisburg, USA. He was inaugurating international seminar on 'Current Scenario in Bio fuels Technology' at NMAM Institute of Technology, NITTE on Tuesday.

“To produce biofuel in large scale, we need to collaborate countries like India where we get enough raw materials and technology experts in biofuel. In this regard, already records are being built up with this institute by the Pennstate University to work together”, he said.

One of the guests of honour, Y B Ramakrishna, Chairman, Karnataka State Bio fuels Development Board, Bangalore said, now a days the whole world is talking of Biofuel because the present rate at which we consume, natural fuel may last only for another 20-30 years and we need to find some alternate resources. In this regard, research and development is required, focusing on quality material and productive plant and advanced conversion technologies.

Talking regarding the research in biofuel, another guest, Dr. Prakash P Kumar, Professor from National University of Singapore said the research and development leads to deliver better products to society and to substitute fossil fuel, even in Singapore also the research activities are in progress in the area of biofuel.

In his presidential speech, Dr S Y Kulkarni said our institute is in a rural sector and being a rural technical institute, we need to do something with environment and the people around it. In this direction, the biofuel plant will help by producing biofuel which is environmental friendly and the generation of the required oil seeds by planting and the collection of raw materials will improve the economy of the farmers around. He also said if we do not think of an alternate for conventional fuel, a day will come to travel in bullock cart.

Dr.S.S.Rao, Principal Scientist, from Sorghum Research, Hyderabad and vice Principal, Dr.Niranjan N.Chiplunkar were on the dais. Dr.C.Vaman Rao, Head of the department of Biotechnology welcome the gathering and gave the introductory remarks. Ms.Savitha compeered the ceremony and Mr.Sandesh, Lecturer in biotechnology proposed the vote of thanks. More than75 delegates from different institutes and research centres were in the seminar.

Thereafter in a press meet Principal Dr S Y Kulkarni said “already we a have a biofuel plant which is producing 10 litres of biofuel a day from nonedible oil seeds and we are using it for our institute generator. We are planning to upgrade it to 1000litres per day. As it requires advanced technology for large scale production, we are planning to sign MoU with two reputed international Universities namely PennState University, Harrisburg, USA and National University of Singapore. For the purpose of establishing large scale production unit, the institute is ready to invest about 5-6 crores”.

Dr.Prakash P.Kumar, said that in Singapore besides oil seeds people started working on extracting biofuel from the outer layer of the trees, coconut and areca nut leaves and many other biological waste by dissociating the cellulose. Being a Manglorean, I am happy to implement such kind of advanced technology even in my native place, he said.

Dr.Sairam Rudrabhatla said PennState University is excited to work with this institute as it has many technology experts in the related area.

Dr.Seetharam Shettigar, Publicity Chairman was also there in the meet.

Mangaluru: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are witnessing a fascinating weather pattern, with chilly early mornings giving way to dry, sweltering afternoons. Over the past two days, dense fog blanketed the rural landscapes, while urban centers like Mangaluru felt the stark contrast of brisk mornings and peak afternoon heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that in rural areas, the morning chill caused temperatures to dip by one to two degrees Celsius below the seasonal norm, intensifying the fog. Monday saw Mangaluru recording a maximum temperature of 33.3°C and a minimum of 22.6°C, reflective of the sharp day-night variation.

While mornings painted a serene picture with mist-covered trees and a cool ambiance, the afternoons proved relentless, with temperatures soaring between 11 am and 3 pm, offering little respite. Currently, there are no signs of rainfall, with forecasts predicting the continuation of this dual weather pattern for the coming days.

Local residents have mixed feelings about this weather trend. Farmers in rural areas appreciate the cool mornings that ease early chores but express concerns over the dry afternoons, which may affect crop irrigation if the dry spell prolongs. In contrast, urban dwellers are enjoying the foggy mornings but brace for the scorching afternoons.

Meteorologists attribute the sudden chill to shifts in atmospheric pressure along the coast, a precursor to possible weather transitions in December. Whether this pattern persists or leads to unexpected changes remains to be seen, but the twin districts are clearly caught in nature's dramatic play of contrasts.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.

chamundeshwari.jpg

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the Hindu Religious Endowment Department to submit a proposal for constructing a gold chariot for the presiding deity of the state, Chamundeshwari, official sources said on Monday.

The directive follows a request from Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dinesh Gooligowda, who highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, which dates back to the 12th century AD.

Gooligowda noted that the existing wooden chariot, donated by devotees from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has deteriorated over time.

“Devotees have expressed their desire to organise a ‘rathotsava’ using a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari. This proposal has been under consideration for some time, with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore,” the MLC said.

He emphasised that the government’s financial involvement would not be required, as devotees are willing to contribute towards making the chariot a reality.

Gooligowda proposed a deadline for the 2025 Dasara festival for the completion of the chariot, ensuring it is ready for the grand procession featuring the idol of Chamundeshwari.
