Mangalore, December 24: Abdul Rasheed, a member of Ullal Town Municipal Council was hospitalized with injuries after a clash broke out between two groups of miscreants on Friday over the selection of office bearers to Ullal Dargah.
The injured Rasheed has identified the men who had assaulted him as Ashraf alias Bellari Ashraf of Mukkachery, Mansoor of Ullal, Moideen Ismail of Sundari Bagh and Nasir of Mukkachery.
A meeting was convened at the Dargah in order to nominate new office-bearers to the Dargah Committee. Earlier in the day, five members were temporarily selected as members but the committee was dissolved following internal differences. As per the norms, office-bearers were selected for a period of five years.
When the meeting began after Jum'a prayar, the sacked members owing allegiance to Sunni Students Federation (SSF) occupied seats on the dias claiming that they were office-bearers of the committee.
The move was opposed by Mr Rasheed who pointed out only legitimate office-bearers could occupy the dias. US Hamza, presiding over the meeting, intervened and solved the problem by allowing them to sit on the dias.
However, the members from two groups were vying to enroll into the committee. A quarrel again erupted when one of the accused Ashraf began to read the resolution.
Rasheed, who opposed the procedure, was attacked with sharp weapons. Sustaining a grievous injury on his face, he was shifted to a private hospital in Thokatu.
Police rushed to the spot and cleared the mob. A case was registered against the five men at Ullal police station.
