National-level art camp on life of Rani Abbakka gets underway

December 25, 2011

Mangalore, December 25: Mangalore University will support the activities carried out by Rani Abbakka Tulu Study Centre at Sanchayagiri in B C Road, said Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy.

He was speaking after inaugurating 'Drishti-Srishti'- the national-level art camp on the life of Rani Abbakka organised by Rani Abbakka Tulu Study Centre at Sanchayagiri on Saturday.

Appreciating the work of the Centre, the VC said that educative and informative programmes could be organised by Rani Abbakka Tulu Study Centre in collaboration with the Tulu Study Chair at the University.

“The Tulu Study Chair receives annual grant from the government for organising various programmes including seminars, conferences, talks etc. If the Abbakka Study Centre comes forward to organise programmes in association with the Tulu Study Chair, then the University could bear the expenses,” he informed.

He said that the concept of bringing the life of Abbakka on canvas in itself was a great initiative. The artists, who have never seen the real Abbakka will have to face the challenge of picturising her on canvas. The artists' perception and imagination power are tested here, he said adding that the programmes of this sort should be organised more and more so as to promote and preserve the rich culture and heritage of the region.

Kannada film director and Karnataka Film Academy President T S Nagabharana who was the chief guest on the occasion, stressed on the significance of understanding history.

“We all live with dreams for tomorrow. But, how can one live the tomorrows by forgetting the yesterdays. The life of one community becomes more significant after the community disappears. It is where the history holds value,” he said.

In his introductory remarks, Prof Thukaram Poojary, who was instrumental in starting the Centre, thanked all those who were the source of inspiration behind his work.

“Rani Abbakka becomes significant for she was the only woman who revolted against the Portuguese despite the opposition from her husband and the neighbouring rulers.

The courage and determination that Abbakka possessed, should be role model to the present generation,” he said.

Prof Poojary informed about his plans to build an open air theatre and a Tulu village at a cost of Rs 50 crore.

As many as 27 artists from across the nation including V T Kale from Bellary, Vasudeo Kamath from Mumbai, K N Ramachandran from Bangalore and others will paint the life and times of Rani Abbakka for the next five days.

The paintings will be exhibited at the Gallery in the Centre on December 28.

Mangaluru: The Ullal police have arrested Manohar, the owner of Vazco Beach Resort, and its manager Bharath in connection with the drowning of three college girls from Mysuru at the resort’s swimming pool on November 17.

City Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal confirmed the arrests, stating that a case has been registered under Section 106 of BNS. The bodies of the victims, all in their twenties, have been handed over to their parents. The women had arrived at the resort for a weekend getaway on November 16.

Following the tragic incident, the resort was sealed by officials led by Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan. The trade license of the resort, issued on June 13, 2024, has been suspended, and the tourism department has temporarily revoked the resort's registration. These actions prohibit the resort from engaging in any tourism-related activities until further notice.

Someshwara TMC Chief Officer stated that the suspension was due to the resort's failure to implement adequate safety measures, which resulted in the loss of three lives. Further investigations are underway.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.

Mangaluru: The iconic Old DC office, a building steeped in 400 years of history, will be the centerpiece of the Heritage Week celebrations in the city. Once the administrative hub of the erstwhile Canara district during the British era, the building now serves as a symbol of Mangaluru’s rich heritage and cultural significance.

Historic Significance

Initially built during the rule of the Bangas under the Vijayanagara Empire, the structure was later converted into the collector’s office. Following an agreement between Tipu Sultan and the British in 1784, the building came under Tipu’s possession until his death. Subsequently, Major Sir Thomas Munro used it as the office for the first district collector.

The building has also seen historical milestones, including the participation of 88 individuals from the district in World War I (1914–1919), as recorded on a commemorative plaque on its exterior.

Heritage Festival: Echoes

To celebrate the city’s history and tourism potential, the Dakshina Kannada district administration is organizing "Echoes," a heritage festival on November 30 and December 1 at the Old DC office premises. The event will feature:

  • A heritage exhibition (open from 10 AM to 6 PM).
  • An art contest for school students.
  • Guided mini heritage walks open to all.
  • An urban sketching contest for college students.
  • A panel discussion on sustainability, followed by a prize distribution ceremony.
  • A musical evening featuring Sur Safar, a fusion band.

A Gateway to Tourism

The festival aims to draw attention to Mangaluru’s untapped tourism potential by blending art, history, and culture. It invites residents and visitors to rediscover the region’s legacy while fostering a sense of pride in its historical landmarks.

This initiative not only commemorates the past but also looks to inspire future efforts in heritage preservation and sustainable tourism.
