Mangalore, December 28: The All India Inter-University Women's Ball Badminton Championship got underway at Alva's College campus at Vidyagiri in Moodbidri on Tuesday, when star of India Award winner in Ball Badminton B N Meera released three sets of tri-colour balloons.
The tournament, hosted by Mangalore University in association with Alva's College, witnessed a grand march past with the participation of athletes from 70 universities across the country.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy hoisted the University's flag, MLA K Abhayachandra Jain unfurled the inter-university flag and Alva's Education Foundation (AEF) chairman M Mohan Alva hoisted the college declaring the tournament open.
Cultural troupes of Tulu Nadu welcomed the guests and athletes to the four-day tournament planned on six courts.
Prof Murthy said that sports and extra–curricular activities help student develop sportive spirit, physical endurance and personality.
Present champion Annamalai University from Tamil Nadu, MGS University from Rajastan, North Maharastra University, University of Jalagaon from Punjab, Gurunanak University in Amristar, Bharathi dasan University and Mangalore University are among the 70 participating teams.
