Mangalore, December 28: A city based surgeon has successfully performed complex gastrointestinal surgery for an elderly woman who was having a colostomy and many complications.
Lily Madtha, a 75 year old lady, hailing from Madanthyar, was presented to Dr Vijay Ramachandran, a Surgical Gastroenterologist and Colorectal Surgeon three weeks earlier with complications following diverticulitis.
She had already undergone multiple surgeries earlier at a charitable teaching hospital in the city. She had been operated four times earlier for complications of diverticular disease of the Sigmoid Colon and had a Colostomy, Paracolostomy hernia, Incisional hernia, Colovesical fistula (abnormal communication between large intestine and urinary bladder) and a Bladder Calculus.
Her most distressing symptom was pertaining to the colostomy. After evaluating the patient, Dr Ramachandran decided to perform a single stage procedure tackling all the problems mentioned above in a Complex reoperative colorectal surgical procedure which lasted five hours.
After ten days of hospital stay, the patient recovered fully and is now free of the colostomy and other problems. Such complex gastrointestinal surgeries and re-operative abdominal surgeries for complications are routinely carried out by Dr Ramachandran at the Department of Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail.
