
Katapady, January 3: In a tragic incident, a senior police head constable was killed, while trying to disperse an unruly mob at Katapady village in Udupi district in the wee hours of Monday.
Police sources said that 52-year-old Yogesh Padakannaya, died after being hit on the head by a stone pelted by some miscreants.
The incident occurred a few minutes after a scuffle broke out among the people gathered at an orchestra organised near the market in the village.
The victim, who was on duty at Katapady police outpost, had rushed to the spot along with two other cops including Assistant Sub-Inspector Vittal Shetty, after the latter received a call from police control room at around 12: 30 am.
When the cops were trying to control the mob, a few miscreants started throwing stones on them. Mr Padakannaya was critically injured when a stone hit the right side of his head.
Although he was immediately rushed to the District Government Hospital at Ajjarkadu, he breathed his last.
A case had been registered at the Kaup police station.
