Mangalore, January 3: A poor girl aged about 10 was rescued from a quarters of a senior official of forest department at Lalbhagh in the city on Tuesday, by a team of officials after they were tipped off about her presence as labourer.
The officials of the Labour Department and Child Development Project under the Department of Women and Child Development raided the quarters of Deputy Conservator of Forests O Palaiah and rescued Renuka, daughter of Hubli based Basavaraju, who is currently working at a nursery at Padil, here.
After an hour-long enquiry, the officials of the Child Welfare Committee took the custody of the girl.
Renuka said that she was studying at Class III at a School in Hubli before coming here as a labourer for a monthly salary of Rs 600.
She also informed that her parents were currently residing at Padil, and she was the eldest among their five children. When asked about her age and when did she quit the school, the girl remained mute. However, she expressed her eagerness to return to the school and continue education.
Senior Labour Inspector H P Jnanesh told media persons that the girl would be sent for medical test to determine her age.
