Udupi, January 4: Udupi district unit of Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (founded by Prof B Krishnappa) held a dharna in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, End Point Manipal, on Wednesday demanding the government to order for a judicial inquiry in to the death of police constable Yogish Padakannaya, at Katapady and book the accused under Dalit atrocity Act.
A group of revelers on the night of Jan 1 had exchange of words with the police constable Yogish who had asked them to keep their celebrations away from the road, during an orchestra programme, organized by Adarsha Yuvaka Vrunda Katapady.
The accused had also assaulted Yogish, during which he was injured. He was admitted to government hosptal, Ajjarkad Udupi for chest pain and stomach ache, where he succumbed to injuries.
Dalit organisations had demanded the police to arrest the accused Ravi Prakash Acharya Katapady, Wifred Oswald D'Souza, Sudhakar Salian, Santhosh, Vijay Moodubelle, Edwin Luis and book them under the Dalit Atrocity Act and for murder of a duty police.
As soon as the police arrested the accused, BJP local leaders gheraod the Kaup police station demanding the release of the accused.
Yielding to pressure police released them on bail without booking them for murder or under the dalith atrocity act, said District Convener of the DSS Ramesh Kotian Kelarkalabettu.
The agitators also demanded the government to grant a compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to the family of the deceased. They also demanded stern action against SP Ravi Kumar and suspension of Kaup SI Mohan Kottari and constable Prasanna for their role inhushing up the case.
DSS leaders Shekhar Hejmadi, Krishna Baje Kukkehalli, Prashanth Thottam, Mohanchandra Kalavara, N Sundar Anjaru, Shibhakar Padubidri and others participated in the protest dharna.
