Mangalore, January 6: Sustained and committed work by a small group of resourceful individuals can surely solve many problems faced by the downtrodden section of the Muslim community in the region, said Abdussalam Puthige, Chief Editor of Varthabharathi.

He was delivering the presidential address at a documentary launch-cum-discussion programme organised by Hidayah Foundation at IMA Hall, here on Friday.

Pointing to the new documentary titled 'The Fact', which visualised the pathetic condition of the Muslims living in the rural areas of Dakshina Kannada district, who were deprived of all facilities and among whom there were a large number of physically and mentally challenged men, women and children, Mr Puthige said determination and hard work by a few enthusiastic and committed youths can bring about a change in the society.

Such kind of poverty related problems are not new to the Muslim community, he said adding that “what we need are the 'people-with-life', who can move by witnessing the heartrending facts of their community, as we cannot expect anything from 'dead bodies'.”

Mr Puthige pointed out that the irresponsibility of the well off segment of the community has largely contributed to conversion of 'khaira ummah' into the 'community with special needs', in which you find a large number of beggars.

Giving the examples of Reza Shah Pahlavi of Iran, Saddam Hussein of Iraq and Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, the three powerful Muslim rulers, who finally met tragic ends, he warned the affluent section of the Muslim community of similar dire consequences if they failed to fulfill their responsibilities.

Chairman of Unity Academy of Education Dr C P Habeeb Rahman, who launched the documentary, opined that the returning to the Qur'an and Sunnah is the only solution to all the problems of Muslim community, which has moved away from the Islamic teachings.

Reminding the people about their short life in this world, social worker Abdul Rauf Puthige suggested the affluent class of the Muslims to write a will to distribute at least 10 percent of their property among the needy after their death.

State joint-secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Mohammed Kunhi said that there was a need to create awareness about Zakath in the community, apart from trying to create an alternative system when the elected governments were failing in their responsibilities.

Mangalore MLA U T Khader, Imam of Ibrahim Khaleel Masjid Imran, Rafeeuddeen Kudroli and Zameer Amber also took part in the discussion. Abdul Razzak Ananthady compered the programme. Mohammed Haneef G welcomed the gathering and Umar U H proposed vote of thanks.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday said the situation in violence-hit Nagamangala town in Mandya district is peaceful now, and steps have been taken to ensure that no untoward incidents take place.

Clashes had broken out between two groups during the Ganesh idol procession in the town, following which mobs went on a rampage with stone pelting and targeting several shops and vehicles leading to tension on Wednesday night.

"Situation in Nagamangala is now peaceful and there is no problem there. I have also instructed officials to hold a peace meeting there. We have instructed officers to ensure that no untoward incidents take place, enough police force is also stationed there," Parameshwara told reporters here.

About 55 people have been arrested in connection with the incident and they have been sent to judicial custody, according to police sources.

Responding to a question on opposition parties including JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy raising doubts about the FIR, he said, "The police will do what has to be done in accordance with law..."

Asked about BJP sending a fact finding team to Nagamangala, the Home Minister said, "Let them find the facts and inform us, and if there is any fact from their fact finding, we will look into it. It will make our work a bit easier." The BJP panel consisting of MLA C N Ashwath Narayan, former Minister Byrathi Basavaraj, former Minister K C Narayana Gowda, state secretary Lakshmi Ashwin Gowda, and former IPS officer Bhaskar Rao, will visit the spot and submit a comprehensive report to the party in a week.

According to police, an argument had broken out between two groups, when the Ganesh idol procession by devotees from Badri Koppalu village reached a place of worship on Wednesday, and some miscreants hurled stones, which escalated the situation.

Kalaburagi: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said that alleged role of "outsiders" belonging to the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in the violence at Nagamangala will be examined and action taken based on the probe report.

Clashes broke out between two groups during a Ganesh idol procession in the town in Mandya district following which mobs went on a rampage targeting several shops and vehicles leading to tension on September 11 night.

"Everything will be examined, investigation will be done, on getting the report we will decide. We will not protect anyone, and unnecessarily no one will be punished. We will look into the facts based on the inquiry report and take action accordingly," Parameshwara told reporters here.

He noted that two officials -- Deputy Superintendent of Police and Inspector -- have already been suspended, and added that further action will be taken based on the report.

The Minister said the government has taken the Nagamangala violence seriously and there is no question of taking such incidents lightly. "BJP makes such allegations, but we too have responsibility, we don't take anything lightly."

On allegations that "outsiders" were involved in the violence, Parameshwara said if inquiry reveals complicity of such elements, it would be examined and action taken accordingly.

Regarding claims that those belonging to the banned PFI were involved, he said: "It will be known from the probe."

On demand for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Nagamangala violence by BJP which alleged "failure" of state's home department, Parameshwara said: "they keep saying such things, we will not listen to all that."

According to police, an argument had broken out between two groups, when the procession by devotees from Badri Koppalu village reached a place of worship on September 11, and some miscreants hurled stones, which escalated the situation.

Following the clashes between the two groups, a few shops were vandalised and goods torched and vehicles set on fire, they added.

To allegations from some BJP leaders that the party MLA Munirathna was arrested "hurriedly", Parameshwara said, police acted after the complaint was given, "what's wrong in that?"

Munirathna, who represents Rajarajeshwari Nagar Assembly segment here, was picked up from Nangli village in Kolar’s Mulbagal on Saturday evening on charges of harassing a Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) contractor for bribe, casteist slurs on a former corporator, and also cheating, criminal intimidation and insulting a woman’s modesty.

Asked about "illegal items" seized from the prison here recently by officials, he said an investigation has begun on this.

When a photo of actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who was lodged in Parappana Agrahara Prison here, hanging out with other inmates surfaced recently, action was taken based on the probe report and eleven officials were suspended.

"I will look into recent seizures made too and action will be taken; also probe is on at other prisons in the state and action will follow if anything wrong is found," the Minister added.

Police raided the high-security wing of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison here on Saturday and seized smartphones and other illegal goods.
