Udupi, January 9: Gopal Kharvi (36), a Limca Book of Records fame swimmer from Kodikanyana, in Udupi district, in an attempt to make a Guinness Book record, swam in the Arabian Sea with his hands cuffed and legs tied, from St Mary's Island to Malpe beach, here on Sunday.
He swam the distance of 9 kilometers from the Island to Malpe beach, in a record time of 2.45 hours.
Udupi DySP Jayanth Shetty put handcuffs to his hands at the Island prior to the starting of his swimming feet. His legs were also tied with chains and locked. He started swimming in the sea from St Mary's Island, at 7.30 am and swam till Malpe beach, with a fisheries boat following him, to help him during the emergencies.
Entrepreneur and Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj, members of swimmers' family and others received the unique swimming talent at Malpe beach.
It is to be noted here that, on Dec 2009 too Gopal Kharvi had tried a similar feet and swam the distance in just 2.20 hours to successfully get his name in the Limca Book of Records.
