Mangalore, January 16: Senior government officers vested with the responsibility of overseeing the 17th National Youth Festival, had to face the ire of city journalists at a press conference called at TMA Pai International Convention Centre a few hours ahead of the valedictory ceremony of the event on Monday in an apparent bid to appease the latter.

The journalists also refused to accept the gifts presented to them at the press conferences in which Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda and DK Zilla Panchayat CEO K N Vijayaprakash were also present.

When the Principal Secretary of Youth Services and Sports I R Perumal was about the wind up the press conference after thanking the media persons for wide coverage of the event and asking them to accept a 'memento', the scribes took him to task and demanded explanation from the officials about how much money they had spent and swallowed in the pretext of arranging 'memento' for the media persons.

A few journalists, who were disappointed with the indifferent treatment during the course of five day-long event accused the officers of irresponsibility and misappropriation.

They also held Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Dakshina Kannada district administration responsible for the alleged favoritism and nepotism in issuing VIP passes for the Festival, as the family members and children of few officers too had bagged VIP passes.

Lack of arrangements for media persons in some places, especially in TMA Pai International Convention Centre, where a few journalists had to sit on the floor while covering the cultural programmes, and restrictions put on photographers and cameramen in many events, were reasons for the further disappointment of the journalists.

Mr Perumal had to apologize the media persons for all the inconvenience caused to them.

Earlier at the press conference Mr Perumal said that the initiative to host this year's Youth Festival in Karnataka was taken by former Youth Services and Sports Minister Gullihatti Shekar after witnessing the 15th edition of the Festival held in Bhubaneswar the capital city of the state of Odisha.

Mr Perumal revealed that Mr Shekar had taken a team of around 170 members Bhubaneswar and sought to organise the festival in Karnataka. This was followed up by Karnataka officials at a meeting held in New Delhi a few weeks after the Minister's visit. It was in May 2011 that the Centre informed the State about hosting the 17th edition of the festival in Bangalore.

However, finally the city of Mangalore was chosen to host the event owing to climate, finance, and other factors, he said.

Mandya: The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Nagamangala town in Mandya district has been suspended for "negligence and dereliction of duty" in connection with the clashes that broke out between two groups during a Lord Ganesh idol procession, police said on Friday.

This is the second suspension of a police officer over the clashes on September 11 following which mobs went on a rampage targeting several shops and vehicles leading to tension here.

The situation in the town has since returned to normalcy and most of the shops have started operating. However, adequate security forces continued to be stationed here as a precautionary measure, according to police.

Sumeeth A R, DySP (Nagamangala), was suspended on Thursday for negligence and dereliction of duty, Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baldandi told PTI.

"He (Sumeeth) was not present at the spot nor was he at the police headquarters when the incident occurred. He arrived late at the spot despite the sensitive nature of events," he said.

Earlier, Police Inspector Ashok Kumar posted at Nagamangala town police station was suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the violence.

A total of 55 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to police, an argument broke out between two groups, when the Ganesh idol procession by devotees from Badarikoppalu village reached a place of worship on September 11, and some miscreants hurled stones, which escalated the situation.

The police had used mild force to disperse the crowd to control the situation.

NRI professionals hailing from the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka, now based in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Australia, have been urging the Indian government and airlines to introduce a direct flight between Mangalore International Airport (MIA) and Singapore’s Changi Airport.

These professionals argue that Singapore’s strategic location as a hub connecting India with East Asia makes this flight essential. They highlight that this route would serve over 12 million people from the coastal and hill regions of southern India, fostering stronger ties with East Asian economies.

The group, consisting of individuals from Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Hassan, is spearheaded by Rajesh H Acharya, director of HQ Connections Pte Ltd, Singapore, and coordinator of the Singapore Tuluver community. Acharya emphasized the significance of the Indian government’s Act East policy, which aims to strengthen relationships between India and ASEAN, East Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

“This flight will open new doors for cultural, trade, tourism, and technological exchanges between these regions,” Acharya said.

The Mangalore Chapter of IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE) has also proposed positioning the region as the 'Silicon Beach of India.' A direct flight would provide greater opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors from both Singapore and Mangaluru, boosting business exchanges.

Moreover, Singapore’s Changi Airport could see increased tourism from the Karnataka coast, while Coastal Karnataka would benefit from a surge in visitors from ASEAN countries, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, and the US West Coast.

While a similar attempt in 2017 did not succeed, Acharya and his team are hopeful that this time their appeal will be taken seriously, tapping into the immense growth potential of the eastern half of the globe.
