Mangalore, January 22: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy president-designate, Rahim Uchil, on Sunday declared that he would not allow politics to come in the way of the cultural body's primary responsibility of promoting Beary culture and literature.

Speaking at the “Byari academyge mooru varsha: sambhrama” held at the auditorium of Hotel Srinivas here, he during his three-year tenure, which begins on February 6, he would strive to keep politics aside and work for the welfare of the Beary-speaking people.

“I am a worker of a party. It is my duty to respect the leaders of my party who have given me this responsibility. But at the same time, I will make sure that Beary academy does not get a political colour. I will make sure that the body remains a community-oriented and non-political forum,” he said.

Outlining his programmes for the next three years, he said he will soon convene a meeting of the representatives of all Beary organizations to seek their suggestions and guidance. “A number of organizations have strived for the promotion of Beary language and culture. Bearys Welfare Association, Beary Kala Ranga, Beary Parishath, Beary Samskrithika Mathu Sahithyika Sangha and a number of other organizations have contributed to the cause of Beary reawakening. Therefore I will try to involve as many people as possible in devising the programme for the next three years. I will also conduct a review after one year and analyze the positives and the negatives. I will not try to force my decision on the academy members. I will function in a democratic manner,” Mr. Uchil said.

The programme also saw speakers after speakers showering encomiums on the outgoing president of the Beary Academy M.B. Abdul Rehman, who turned emotional towards the end and thanked all those who helped him in making the Academy a model for others through a series of meaningful programmes. He also thanked his adversaries for keeping him on his toes and making him work harder towards realizing his dreams.

“I have tried my best to discharge my duties without fear or favour. My endeavour in the last three years has been to identify the hidden talents and give them a platform. I have also tried to encourage artistes and writers by felicitating them. There may be several deserving people who may have been left out. They should not despair as the Academy will not come to an end with the end of his term. The opportunities are still open. I don't have a magic wand through which I can satisfy everyone,” Mr. Rehman said in his emotion-laden speech.

“I have had a mixed experience. I have had both sweet and bitter memories. I have exhibited lot of patience and 'sabr'. I have ensured that the Academy worked as a team. The new president and his team has the responsibility of continuing the good work that has been taken up during my tenure and ensure that it continued to gain the appreciation and admiration of the people of the district,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, UGMA Haq, senior advocate and notary, said that the outgoing president's achievements should act as a model to the incumbent. G.A. Bava, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, said Mr. Rehman has seen through the difficult period of infancy and it was now the responsibility of the new president to carry forward the good work. “He did not confine the Academy to Mangalore. He organized more than 60 programmes across the state including places like Mysore, Madikeri, Shimoga and Bangalore,” he said.

Abdul Rauf Puttige, founder chairman of Talent Research Foundation, released a Beary book titled “Arabina Nights” authored by Mohammed Kulai. He urged the Academy to discuss on issues of deprivation and backwardness as emphasized in the Justice Rajendra Sachar committee report.

Abdul Rahim T.K., founder president of Beary Sahitya Parishat, urged the Beary community members to develop reading habits and encourage literary talents. “It is unfortunate that the readership in Beary language is very limited. Mr. Kulai himself has told me that his Mitthabail Yamunakka has seen two reprints while the copies his Beary books still remain unsold,” Mr. Rahim T.K. said.

Bashir Baikampady, President Beary Sahitya mathu Samskrithika Sangha, urged the new president of the Academy to make sure writers, theater persons and intellectuals of the Beary community are inducted as members. “I have got an information that as many as 120 applications from the aspirants have already gone to the concerned people. It is also accused that only BJP members were being considered for appointment,” he said.

Beary leader MB Noor Mohammed, B. A. Mohammed Haneef, honorary president of Akhila Bharatha Beary Parishat, Abid Beary, senior manager, Bank of Baroda, Surathkal, B.A. Mohammed Ali, poet, Haji Abdul Razak, president, the Bearys Welfare Association, Mysore, and M.E. Haneef, president Badriya Jamath, Madikeri lauded the achievements of Mr. Rehman.

Former Minister B.A. Mohidin, who presided over the function, said the Beary Academy came into being after years of struggle. “The academy has not come into being just like that. There had been a long drawn struggle behind it. The academy will exist until there is a democratically elected government in the State. “The new president should understand that the Academy should function within a boundary keeping in view the sensibilities of the Beary community. The community is not known for its broad minded approach. It did not celebrate the news of academy formation in a real big way. The community is very sensitive about certain things and the new committee should keep these factors in mind,” he said.

Members and the outgoing president of the Academy were also felicitated. Registrar Umarabba delivered a welcome speech. Sharief Nirmunje sang a felicitation song in Kannada. B.M. Tumbe, compered the programme. P. Mohammed proposed a voted of thanks.

Udupi: A vigilant Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, Aparna K T, demonstrated remarkable presence of mind when she rescued a student who slipped while trying to board a moving train at Udupi Railway Station on Friday morning.

The incident occurred as passenger train number 06602 arrived at the station around 7:30 AM. The student, traveling from Mangaluru to Gokarna, had briefly alighted to purchase snacks. However, as the train began moving, she hurried back towards the carriage with the snacks in hand. In her rush, she lost her footing, slipping dangerously between the platform and the moving train.

Woman constable Aparna K T was given a cash reward of Rs 5000.

Constable Aparna, who had been closely monitoring the passengers, immediately sprang into action. “I saw her running towards the train and alerted everyone by blowing my whistle. She slipped, and her legs were caught between the platform and the train. Without hesitation, I pulled her out with the help of others nearby,” she recalled.

Thanks to Aparna’s quick thinking and the swift response of the railway staff, the train was stopped in time. Railway personnel, including the guard and loco pilot, were immediately informed, and they acted promptly to halt the train using both flag signals and a walkie-talkie.

RPF Inspector Madhusoodhanan PV arrived at the scene shortly after to check on the passenger's condition. The shaken but uninjured student was given water and helped back onto the train to safely continue her journey.

In an added measure of care, the RPF post at Bhatkal was notified to follow up on the passenger’s well-being during her journey. The student, fortunately, reached her destination without further incident.

The heroic rescue was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral on social media, earning widespread praise. In recognition of her bravery, Regional Railway Manager (RRM) Karwar awarded Constable Aparna a cash reward of ₹5,000, commending her quick action that averted a potentially tragic accident.

In a grand celebration of patriotism and local pride, Karnataka’s second tallest flagpole, and the tallest in Dakshina Kannada, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, September 18, at the iconic Kadri Park in Mangaluru.

The event, a significant milestone in the city's Smart City journey, was graced by several prominent leaders. MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, a distinguished guest at the inauguration, spoke passionately about the symbolic importance of the flag. "This towering structure, made possible through the Smart City initiative, elevates the pride of every Indian. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, national sentiment has deepened. The national flag is not just a symbol, it embodies our self-respect and unity as a nation."

MLA Vedavyas Kamath shared his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance beyond mere construction. "The flagpole at Kadri Park, funded under the Smart City project, will not only serve as a beacon of patriotism but will also become a significant attraction, enhancing the city's tourism appeal."

"Standing at an impressive 75 meters, second only to Belagavi's 110-meter flagpole, this new landmark is a testament to Mangaluru's growth and aspirations. The project, which cost Rs 75 lakh, will feature an advanced lighting system, ensuring it shines brightly, day and night, as a symbol of our national pride."

The ceremony saw the attendance of key dignitaries, including Deputy Mayor Sunita, Standing Committee President Bharath Kumar, Varun Chowta, Ganesh Kulal, MCC opposition leader Praveen Chandra Alva, MCC member Shakeela Kava, former Mayor Jayananda Anchan, Bhaskar K, and former MUDA president Ravishankar Mijar, each contributing to the significance of the occasion.

Mangaluru: The block level and District Congress Committee presidents in the state will be changed in the next one month for better reach into society and bring in organisational fortification, said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president G C Chandrasheker on Saturday.

The All India Congress Committee and KPCC have a vision for bringing a change in how the party works with the last man and woman in the state, he said at a press conference here.

"We are looking at bringing development models into the state with a new vision. We are a party that likes to work with the opposition in the developmental aspects and keep all other matters away that do not relate to the development of the state.

"We have a great respect for the people of the coast who are considered to be forward-looking and perceptible, but it is also true that we do not have the numbers in the upper house and in the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)," he said.

"Our endeavour is to not only create a strong pro-development workforce at the base level by strengthening the second and third level leadership in the state," he said.

Chandrasheker, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, said that he and his four colleagues of the rank of working presidents of the KPCC are going to every district to infuse the new thinking in our workers and leaders.

"This move will get a new surge considering the party is facing byelections in Shiggaon, Chennapatna and Sandhur segments and also vacant seats in the legislative council, followed by elections to the Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats" he said.

When asked about the reason for the changes, Chandrashekar said most of the people have already lived their tenures. The party wants to reward those who have not been given tickets to contest in the 2023 state assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha elections for political reasons.

There are quite good leaders and hard-working ground level workers who have great potential to lead the party in the coming years, he said.

"Women will get at least one top post in all District Congress Committees and block levels. There is also a move to give responsible positions for the workers and leaders coming from different strata of society, which are deliverable. The party will not shy away from it," he said.

The other two working presidents, Dr Manjunath Bhandary and Vasanth Kumar, were also present at the press conference.

Kumar said some of the regions in the state are dominated by the BJP. "We want to end this run and defeat the divisive models of the BJP." Bhandary said the Indian National Congress was aiming at a high development phase in the state and involve the opposition parties and their leaders in the development plans in the state.
