Karwar, February 15: Karnataka State Prantha Raitha Sangha General Secretary G C Bayya Reddy on Tuesday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Karwar for issuing “a mischievous statement” against the agitation by people living within the 5-km radius from the Kaiga Nuclear Power Station.
Mr. Reddy told presspersons here that the statement of the BJP leaders was a sign of their frustration. He said that KPRS was a non-political organisation and anybody could become its member.
Dismissing the allegation of the BJP that KPRS was an organisation sponsored by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he said that the BJP should behave in a responsible manner.
Mr. Reddy said that district in-charge Minister Anand Asnotikar had accompanied a delegation of people from Kaiga to New Delhi. But the differences between Mr. Asnotikar and local BJP leaders had made some to come out with such a statement.
Mr. Reddy claimed that Congress leaders from Karwar, who had initially participated in the agitation, which entered 72nd day on Tuesday, wanted it to continue under their party banner. When people of Kaiga refused, the Congress leaders even threatened the agitators, he said.
Justifying the hoisting of a KPRS flag at the dharna venue, Mr. Reddy said it was hoisted as demanded by agitators when the protest entered the 50{+t}{+h}day. If the agitators allowed, even the Congress and BJP members could hoist their flags at the venue, he said.
Mr. Reddy said some local BJP leaders in Karwar were behaving irresponsibly.
