Mangalore, February 25: Indian science and technology development relevant to the inclusive growth of the country such that they generate a greater and immediate impact on the lives of the people at large, according to senior nuclear scientist, Padmashri Dr Srikumar Banerjee.

Delivering convocation address at the ninth annual convocation of National Insitute of Technology-Karnataka at Suratkal near here on Saturday, he called upon the students to consider this as a challenge in their lives.

Dr Banerjee, who is the current Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Department of Atomic Energy of Government of India, said this challenge involves large scale innovations in every sphere of science and technology.

“The challenge is to transform from 'Made in India' economy to 'Designed in India' economy. This is what the country is expecting from all of you”, he said.

He said in the globalized phase, the scientific research must connect to the society, both intellectually and economically. Research must be seen as an important instrument of economic growth. It is important for a researcher to think that research is not his sole prerogative, but he must include people as an important stake holder in the process of scientific research.

“If it is a question of 'career' then there are opportunities abound in the 'globalized' economy, and a career in science and technology is not as attractive. This is where we need a new thought, a new thought that will convert this country into a real powerhouse of innovations. Key to this is 'inclusiveness' in our approach to science and technology”, he said.

He said that the the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor of 500 MWe capacity is currently under construction at Kapakkam. The third stage will be based on the thorium-233U cycle. Timely implementation of this stage is very crucial for meeting the increasing carbon-free energy demands in the country, he said.

Dr Banerjee stressed that the entire thorium utilization programme would eventually require several new technology inputs.

“Many of these technologies have to be developed for the early implementation of the thorium fuel cycle as India is. With sustained efforts over the past several years, India has developed sufficient experience, which has led to operation of a research reactor KAMINI based on 233U fuel at Kalpakkam and design of an Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) with the objective of developing several enabling technologies required for thorium based systems at BARC”, he explained.

Thus the Indian Nuclear Programme has the potential to provide long term energy security to the country for several centuries to come, he added.

Dr Banerjee also assured that India's nuclear energy programme was safe and there was no chance of Fukushima' happening in this country. “I must also add here that the 'Fukushima' incidence has not slowed down the global nuclear energy programme”, he stated.

Sushil Chandra Tripathi, Chairman of the Board of Governors of NITK presided over the ceremony. Prof Sandeep Sancheti, Director of NITK welcomed the gathering and delivered introductory address.

Members of the board of governors, members of the senate, faculty, staff and parents were also present during the convocation.

This year NITK has crossed the three figure mark in number of students passing out. It now has 1132 students passing out during 2010-11. The peak Indian salary for students passing out is Rs 16 lakh and international salary is Rs 64 lakhs.

As many as 509 students have graduated with B Tech degrees and 455 with Mtech, 70 with MCA, 40 with MBA, 42 with MSc and 16 students obtained PhD degrees. 37 students were awarded medals for outstanding academic performance.

Karnataka's Urban Development Minister, BS Suresha (Byrathi), has initiated a detailed investigation into ₹5,527 crore worth of projects executed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Smart Cities Mission in six cities of the state.

The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work in Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru. To ensure accountability, Suresha announced the formation of a committee comprising experts from universities and the Indian Institute of Science. The committee will assess the projects and submit its findings within three months.

Bengaluru, however, is excluded from the probe as it falls under the jurisdiction of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Launched in 2015, the Smart Cities Mission aims to enhance urban infrastructure across 100 cities in India, funded jointly by the central and state governments. Karnataka has spent ₹6,405 crore under this mission, including ₹877.72 crore in Bengaluru.

"Most of the funds have been allocated to roads, drainage, and park maintenance," Suresha lamented in a statement. "The focus should have been on creating permanent infrastructure such as smart schools, hospitals, libraries, and bus stands."

Suresha pointed out that, on average, each Smart City in Karnataka received ₹990 crore, with spending patterns revealing 36% on roads, 8% on energy, 2% on education, 2% on healthcare, and 5% on sports. He criticized this distribution, emphasizing that projects under the mission should have developed long-lasting government assets instead of temporary solutions like roads and drains.

With the mission slated to conclude in March 2025, Suresha urged the remaining funds to be directed towards constructing world-class smart schools. "This will enable children from economically weaker sections to access quality education," he said.

The minister also revealed that he had received multiple complaints from elected representatives about substandard work, particularly in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga. The probe, he assured, will prioritize transparency and accountability.

From shocking sex scandals to high-profile scams and intense factional power struggles, Karnataka's political landscape in 2024 played out like a gripping thriller. The state's three dominant parties—Congress, BJP, and JD(S)—found themselves entangled in controversies, scandals, and unexpected alliances, keeping the political stage turbulent throughout the year.

Shocking Hassan Sex Scandal Hits JD(S)
The JD(S) faced a monumental crisis with the Hassan sex scandal involving its MP Prajwal Revanna. Allegations of sexual exploitation surfaced through pen drives containing incriminating videos, sending shockwaves across the nation. Revanna fled the country but was arrested on May 31 upon his return. The scandal not only embarrassed the JD(S) but also led to the party losing its stronghold in Hassan, a seat it had held since 1999.

Congress' Struggles with Scams and Infighting
The Congress, riding high after its 2023 Assembly poll victory, faced a series of setbacks. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s reputation as “Mr. Clean” was tarnished by allegations in the MUDA site-allotment scam, for which he is under court-ordered investigation. The Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation Limited scam also led to the resignation and arrest of Minister B Nagendra.

Adding to the Congress' woes, the BJP spotlighted a controversial marking of farmers' lands as Waqf properties, further intensifying the political storm. However, the Congress bounced back by sweeping three critical by-elections in Channapatna, Shiggaon, and Sandur, silencing critics and bolstering support for its flagship guarantee schemes.

BJP-JD(S) Alliance: A Rocky Path
The BJP and JD(S), forced into an alliance after 16 years, saw relative success in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. While the BJP won 17 of the 25 seats it contested, the JD(S) secured two seats, enabling its state president H D Kumaraswamy to join the Modi 3.0 Cabinet.

However, the BJP faced its own internal strife, with factional tensions erupting after the appointment of B Y Vijayendra, son of B S Yediyurappa, as the state party president. MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal openly criticized Vijayendra’s leadership, earning a show-cause notice. Adding to the BJP’s troubles were sexual assault allegations against Yediyurappa and MLA Munirathna, which tarnished the party's image.

Power Tussle within Congress
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s ambitions for the top post grabbed headlines after a controversial interview where he hinted at an "agreement" for chief ministership. While Chief Minister Siddaramaiah denied such an arrangement, Shivakumar’s comments reignited debates about factionalism within the Congress.

Legislative Drama and Bitter Exchanges
The year ended with heated debates in the Belagavi session. The BJP cornered the Congress on the Waqf land issue, while Congress countered with statistical defenses. Tensions flared when Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar accused BJP leader C T Ravi of using derogatory language against her, leading to Ravi's arrest and subsequent bail.

Karnataka in 2024 was a year of intense political drama, marked by scandals, power struggles, and shifting alliances—offering a preview of the state's evolving political dynamics in the years to come.

BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath and several BJP leaders were arrested in Mangaluru during a protest organized by the Dakshina Kannada BJP Yuva Morcha near Mini Vidhana Soudha.

The protest targeted the Congress-led Siddaramaiah government, accusing it of fostering an environment of harassment and distress, which the BJP claims has led to multiple suicides among contractors and government officials.

Key Points:

Addressing the gathering before his arrest, Kamath criticized the Congress government, alleging that neither contractors nor honest officials have found peace since it assumed power. He remarked, "Suicide seems to be the only 'guarantee' under this administration."

Kamath cited the suicide of contractor Sachin, allegedly driven to death by harassment from individuals linked to Minister Priyank Kharge.

Other cases highlighted included the suicides of Chandrashekar, superintendent of the Maharshi Valmiki Development Corporation, and Rudresh, who was allegedly harassed by an aide of Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar.

Kamath also referred to a Dalit inspector, Parashuram, who reportedly succumbed to alleged torture connected to Congress MLA Channareddy Patil’s son.

He accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar of remaining silent due to political fears over their positions.

Prominent BJP leaders such as Ramesh Kandetthu, Premananda Shetty, Vikas Puttur, Nandan Mallya, Monappa Bhandary, Pooja Pai, Deputy Mayor Bhanumathi, and Sanjay Prabhu participated in the protest alongside party workers and municipal council members.

The protest escalated, resulting in the arrest of Kamath and other BJP leaders by the police, marking a dramatic standoff between BJP and Congress.
