Mangalore, March 6: Over two dozens of people including fire personnel fell sick following chlorine leakage in two chlorine cylinders kept inside the municipal water purification unit at Jakkirabettu in Bantwal taluk on Monday night.
According to police, the pump house of the Bantwal TMC had two chlorine cylinders for treating the water during monsoon. However, at around 8.30 pm, it started leaking. As people were not aware of the leakage, many approached the pump house without precautionary measures and fell unconscious.
When the local residents complained of staunch smell emanating from the pump house to the Bantwal TMC, the pump operator Koraganna opened the door of the pump house and complained of nausea.
In fact, the fire and police personnel rushed to the spot without any precautionary measures in the beginning. Fire service personnel from Mangalore, who rushed to the spot and neutralized the gas effect and later buried the chlorine cylinders below the ground.
Those who fell sick have been admitted to the hospitals in Mangalore and Bantwal.
