Mangalore, March 14: Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's refusal to campaign for BJP candidate Sunil Kumar in Chikmagalur-Udupi Lok Sabha by-poll has caused jitters in the BJP camp.

The sudden Delhi trip by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who has refused to campaign for BJP candidate Sunil Kumar in Chikmagalur-Udupi Lok Sabha by-poll has caused jitters in the BJP camp.

Next Sunday's crucial bypoll is expected to be an acid test for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The bigger question is whether the BJP will be successful in retaining the seat without the services of Mr. Yeddyurappa, who is regarded as responsible for the party's victory in the 2008 Assembly elections as well as the byelections held so far.

Meanwhile, JD(S) has accused the former chief minister of striking a pact with the Congress to defeat the BJP candidate. “Yeddyurappa is determined to settle political scores with chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda by ensuring the BJP candidate's defeat in the by-poll. Yeddyurappa has been sending a message for Veerashaiva voters in the constituency to vote for Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde in the by-poll,” said JD(S) leader Basavaraj Horatti.

Mr. Yeddyurappa's absence from the BJP's campaign is likely to help Congress candidate K. Jayaprakash Hegde, who lost the 2009 general elections to Mr. Gowda, the then BJP State unit president, by a margin of nearly 27,000 votes.

Mr. Yeddyurappa is seeking to convey to the party national leadership that the BJP has been triumphant in the elections thanks to his hard work and without him the electorate's response to the party will be poor.

Should the BJP candidate emerge victorious, then Mr. Yeddyurappa stands to be pushed further away from the party mainstream.

The onus is now on the incumbent Chief Minister and president of the State unit of the BJP K.S. Eshwarappa to prove to the BJP national leadership that despite Mr. Yeddyurappa's boycott, they can comfortably hold aloft the BJP flag.

Interestingly, several Cabinet Ministers, who are closely associated with Mr. Yeddyurappa, are on the campaign trail. There are nearly one lakh Lingayat voters in the constituency, which has an electorate of nearly 12 lakh.

Mr. Yeddyurappa's boycott is expected to push Lingayats to vote for the Congress candidate.

The BJP candidate Mr. Kumar who was earlier a member of the Legislative Assembly elected from the Karkala Assembly segment is stated to be putting up a stiff fight against the Congress candidate but deep divisions within the ruling party is expected to damage his chances.

Udupi, Nov 7: In a tragic turn of events, a young woman, Prasanna, aged 29, allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday, struggling to cope with the demands of work and motherhood after the birth of her daughter, according to police reports.

Prasanna had married on December 2, 2022, and was the mother of a 10-month-old baby girl. Her husband works in Bengaluru, while she lived with her in-laws, who, according to her family, treated her kindly.

In a complaint, Prasanna's mother revealed that her daughter often called her, expressing deep concerns over her readiness for motherhood. Despite receiving supportive care from her family, Prasanna felt unprepared and overwhelmed by the balance of work and home life that early motherhood required.

Her family shared that she had been undergoing treatment, but between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, she allegedly took her own life at her husband’s residence. The Karkala Rural Police Station has registered a case and is conducting further investigations.

Bengaluru, Nov 1: Hardline BJP leader and Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "Nationalise Waqf Assets", alleging Waqf board of "blatant violation" in claiming of the lands of Farmers, temples and mutts.

Taking to his social media, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal posted on X, saying "I have written a letter to the hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji to Nationalize the Waqf Assets in view of the arbitrary, blatant violation in claiming of the lands of Farmers, Landowners, Temples, Trusts and Mutts across the country by the Waqf board. All the citizens of the country have equal rights on the land. If the motive of Waqf is welfare and social service, this has to be done without bias and religious discrimination as India is a secular nation."

Additionally, Vijayapura MLA also attached the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his post.

Earlier, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had accused the Waqf Board of encroaching on thousands of acres of farmers' lands with the support of the Karnataka government.

Surya stated, "There have been multiple press conferences and videos in the public domain where the Minister himself has admitted that these Waqf adalats are being conducted under the Chief Minister's instructions. This is a grave matter, where thousands of acres of farmers' lands are being encroached upon by the Waqf Board with the active support and collusion of the State Government."

He mentioned that, in recent days, farmers from various districts across Karnataka have reported that, without prior notice, ownership of their lands has been abruptly transferred to the Waqf Board.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticised BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, claiming he has done nothing for Bengaluru. Kharge's remarks came in response to the BJP MP's accusations regarding Waqf Board land encroachment.

The Congress leader assured that the Karnataka government is committed to protecting farmers' properties.

Kharge further questioned the BJP's record on protecting temples during its previous government, stating that the Karnataka government is committed to safeguarding temples and common people's properties.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged embezzlement of Waqf properties. This demand follows findings from the Anwar Manippady committee's report, which reveals that while 54,000 acres of land are registered with the Waqf Board, approximately 29,000 acres have been misappropriated.

Capt. Chowta emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “A comprehensive probe should be conducted based on this report. Those who have illegally encroached on these properties must be held accountable.”

He challenged the Congress party, suggesting that if they genuinely care for the Muslim community and underprivileged women, their members should actively participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. This participation is essential to ensure that Waqf properties are used effectively for community welfare.

The MP criticized the notices served to farmers in Honvada village, Vijayapura, which stated that nearly 1,200 acres of their ancestral land was being reassigned to the Waqf Board. He expressed that this issue arose while the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working on amendments to the Waqf Act. He accused the Congress-led state government, particularly Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, of trying to enforce outdated 50-year-old notifications about Waqf properties. After the farmers raised concerns, Minister M. B. Patil clarified that the confusion was due to an error in the gazette.

Chowta alleged that Congress members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee are obstructing proceedings and causing disruptions. He expressed suspicion that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might have instructed Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan to implement these outdated notifications regarding Waqf properties. As a result, he demanded the Minister's resignation.

He accused the Congress party of exploiting Muslim voters for the past 75 years without making substantial efforts for their welfare. Furthermore, he highlighted that the BJP is launching a campaign against land jihad, pointing out that the Waqf Board controls one of the largest land banks after the Defence and Railways sectors. Finally, he urged citizens to check the revenue records (RTC) of their land ownership to verify its status.
