The survey was conducted in the wake of repeated accusations of harassment levelled by fishermen against the naval base authorities. Many fishermen were allegedly attacked by the naval staff for transgressing the stipulated boundary in the sea. Recently a fisherman was beaten up in the sea by the naval officials who allegedly took away the fish caught by him.
Meeting
Following this incident a meeting of the Deputy Commissioner, Naval officials and the fishermen was held in Karwar to avoid such incidents in the future. It was decided in the meeting that a joint survey would be held to identify the boundaries of the naval base in Karwar.
The officials of the port department, Navy, Revenue Department and fishermen leaders were present during the survey. The fishermen explained their problem to the officials and requested that instead of showing the area between Pandurang Hll, Anjudeev Island and Kuduregejje Hll a straight line should be drawn by joining these hills. The survey was followed by a meeting of the Deputy Commissioner, Naval officials and the port officials. It is expected that a final decision would be taken within a fortnight.
