Mangalore, March 16: The Union budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee earlier today has attracted more criticism than praise from people of the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.

Following are some responses of people who spoke to Coastaldigest.com:

Latha Kini, President, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Increase of service tax and central excise tax will hurt the common man. It will result in price rise of all goods and affect all sections of the society. Subsidies for the agriculture sector have been retained so the burden has now fallen on the common man and the traders. The real tax collectors will be in dire straits now as the profit margin is reduced. The trade dealer will get nothing.

There are some positives too. Reducing interest rates for women of self-help groups is a good move. The infrastructure outlay is good and it was needed, or else, a revival is difficult. The Finance Minister has stressed on power needs and exemption to coal etc is a positive move. It is needed, keeping the future in mind.

G Hanumanth Kamath, President, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, DK:

It is a capitalistic budget. The middle class has not benefited from this budget. Reducing rates for grocery items should have been considered. The increase of service tax will affect the common man. Although they have reduced rates of petroleum products, they will soon bring about a rise in prices quoting increase in rates of crude oil etc.

B Ramanath Rai, MLA:

It is a balanced budget. Importance has been given to child welfare which is a good move.

Padmanabha Kottari, DK Dist President, BJP:

This budget has been severe on the poor and the middle class. Rates of Beedi and Gutka have been increased. It is the poor who buy these products. Also, gold prices have also been increased. There is no improvement at all.

Adv. Raghavendra Rao, President, DK BJP Yuva Morcha:

No importance has been given to small investors. The Union government has increased the level for Income Tax to Rs 2 lakh which was Rs. 1,50,000 before. This is again unfair on the middle class. They have reduced prices for salt and matchbox which was not necessary. Overall, it's a pro-rich budget.

M G Hegde, JDS leader:

Although it boasts of possessing economic experts such as Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee, the Congress government has failed to fulfill people's expectations in this year's budget. It is just a technical and statistical balancing act and nothing has been done for the middle class. Besides, by merely giving subsidies to farmers, their problems won't be solved. Measures have to be taken for overall village development and agriculture development. Prices for TV, refrigerator etc have also been increased, conveniently forgetting thatsuch electronic goods are widely used by middle class and lower middle class people.

Muneer Katipalla, State Vice President, and DK Dist President, DYFI:

This budget has given scope for the growth of PPP (Public Private Partnership) which will only take privatization forward. It will have its impact on health, educational and other sectors where common people and students will have to suffer. The subsidies retained for farmers are mere gimmiks and no serious measures have been taken to stop farmer suicides. Reducing interest for Provident Funds, will also work in the favour of MNCs which shows that this budget is pro-corporates.

Mangaluru: Six youths including teenagers have been arrested by the Bantwal Rural Police in connection with a brutal assault on 21-year-old Aboobakar (name changed to hide identity), an incident that was widely shared on social media after footage revealed the victim tied to a pole and violently beaten.

The arrested individuals, all from Kanchinadkapadavu, Sajipanadu village in Ullal Taluk, have been identified as Mohammad Sapwan (25), Mohammad Rizwan (25), Irfan (27), Anis Ahmad (19), Nasir (27), and Shakeer (18). According to police reports, the assault took place on November 7 in Kanchinadkapadavu.

The sequence of events began when Aboobakar was reportedly called to a residence in Kanchinadkapadavu by a female relative. Upon his arrival, he was confronted by the accused, who questioned his presence, tied him to a pole with ropes, and attacked him while he was shirtless.

Aboobakar managed to file a police complaint the following day, detailing the assault. As his injuries worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

While in the hospital, Aboobakar alleged that his attackers intended to kill him during the assault. This statement led to additional charges of attempted murder being filed.

Police officials stated that the suspects were subsequently apprehended, charged with group assault and attempted murder, and placed in judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged embezzlement of Waqf properties. This demand follows findings from the Anwar Manippady committee's report, which reveals that while 54,000 acres of land are registered with the Waqf Board, approximately 29,000 acres have been misappropriated.

Capt. Chowta emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “A comprehensive probe should be conducted based on this report. Those who have illegally encroached on these properties must be held accountable.”

He challenged the Congress party, suggesting that if they genuinely care for the Muslim community and underprivileged women, their members should actively participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. This participation is essential to ensure that Waqf properties are used effectively for community welfare.

The MP criticized the notices served to farmers in Honvada village, Vijayapura, which stated that nearly 1,200 acres of their ancestral land was being reassigned to the Waqf Board. He expressed that this issue arose while the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working on amendments to the Waqf Act. He accused the Congress-led state government, particularly Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, of trying to enforce outdated 50-year-old notifications about Waqf properties. After the farmers raised concerns, Minister M. B. Patil clarified that the confusion was due to an error in the gazette.

Chowta alleged that Congress members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee are obstructing proceedings and causing disruptions. He expressed suspicion that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might have instructed Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan to implement these outdated notifications regarding Waqf properties. As a result, he demanded the Minister's resignation.

He accused the Congress party of exploiting Muslim voters for the past 75 years without making substantial efforts for their welfare. Furthermore, he highlighted that the BJP is launching a campaign against land jihad, pointing out that the Waqf Board controls one of the largest land banks after the Defence and Railways sectors. Finally, he urged citizens to check the revenue records (RTC) of their land ownership to verify its status.
