Mangalore, March 17: Members of DK District Congress have accused the BJP of planning to supersede the Corporation.
Speaking to mediapersons at the district party office on Saturday, Shashidhar Hegde, Former Mayor, said that BJP corporators remained absent for the elections of the Finance standing committee on Friday. “This is a political trick being used by them to make sure that the budget is not passed by March end. If the standing committee chief is not appointed now, it would be tough to present the budget by month-end. When people gave them the mandate to rule for five years, we accepted it and sat in the opposition expressing our full cooperation to them. For four years they ruled and now when our candidate has become Mayor, they are not cooperating with us”, he said.
He also said that the Belgaum Corporation has also been superceded in the past owing to similar reasons.
The party members also alleged that the BJP has violated the norms of Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act by taking the Mayoral election dispute to the High Court. They said that as per the Act, any dispute relating to the validity of the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Standing Committee should be decided by the District Court, which the BJP has failed to approach.
K Ashraf, Former Mayor, on the occasion alleged that the former standing committee chief is still using the corporation's vehicle.
