Mangalore, March 21: Congress workers and leaders have been out in city streets on Wednesday, as former minister Jayaprakash Hegde emerged victorious in the adjacent Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency bypoll.
As soon as the results were announced, dozens of Congress workers gathered outside the District Congress Office in the city shouting slogans in support of Hegde. They distributed sweets and burst crackers out of joy.
Speaking on the occasion, KPCC secretary Ivan D'Souza demanded the ruling party of the state to dissolve the assembly and face fresh elections.
“The results of Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency is not only a victory of Congress and but also the peoples mandate against BJP government in the state” he said.
“This is a beginning. Congress will re-establish its strength in entire coastal Karnataka in days to come”, he said, adding that the 'secular Congress will return to power in Karnataka in next assembly elections.
He is that it is shame for BJP that it could not retain its prestigious constituency vacated by Chief Minister D V Sadanada Gowda. “People of CM's own constituency have voted for Congress and taught an unforgettable lesson for BJP”, he said.
