Mangalore, April 11: The Dakshina Kannada district administration has formed three teams as part of general preparedness in the wake of warning of possible tsunami.
The alerts have been issued in wake of an earthquake of high intensity off the Sumatra coast.
Deputy Commissioner NS Channappa Gowda and city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh called on the people not to pay heed to rumours regarding possibility of tsunami.
Following an emergency meeting with officials of various departments, Mr Gowda told media persons that he had asked the Mangalore city and DK district police, fire brigade, revenue department and home guards to take necessary precautionary measures.
He said that three teams would keep an eye especially at coastal areas like Bengre Kasba, Ullal, Sasihithlu and Sulthan Batteri.
The DC has also asked the concerned authorities to prevent people from gathering on beaches.
In case of emergency, KSRTC buses will be utilized among other vehicles to vacate the people from sea shores. Apart from three boats at New Mangalore Port, all boats belonging to department of fisheries are prepared to deal with any situation, he said.
