Mangalore, April 13: Scores of youth engraved their signatures on a broad canvas expressing their opposition to the evil practice of dowry outside Eidgah mosque in Mangalore on Friday.
The signature campaign was organized by an energetic organization of youngsters from the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi called 'Youth Against Dowry'.
Dr. Farhan Muhammad, President, Youth Against Dowry, DK and Udupi, started off the proceedings with his signature.
Addressing the gathering Dr. Farhan said that many Muslims are not being able to perform the mandatory Hajj owing to accumulation of wealth for dowry. He urged the youth to say no to the evil practice and help many a poor family in the society. He added that an appeal to make the society dowry-free will also be made through the Qazi in all mosques.
Saif Sulthan, another member of the organization in his short address said that dowry has played a major role in increasing poverty in the society. He urged members hailing from various jamaaths of their regions to cooperate and fight against the evil.
Public screenings of a video documentary on dowry 'Urulu' by Shah Production will be held in every jamaath, the organisers said.

Youth Against Dowry will also hold mobile awareness campaigns wherein it will try to reach out to people of various places and villages in DK and Udupi.
