Mangalore, April 23: The 385th birth anniversary of Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji was formally celebrated in Mangalore on Monday under the joint auspices of Dakhsina Kannada district administration, Department of Kannada and Culture and Karnataka Kshatria Maratha Parishat, Dakshina Kannada.
In his inaugural address Yogish Bhat, MLA, said that from this year the Government of Karnataka has initiated official celebration of Shivaji's birthday.
Shedding light on the qualities of Shivaji, Mr. Bhat said that he was an able administrator and practiced religious tolerance. “He handled areas of civil administration, defence and internal intelligence ably, all three areas which have great significance in our administration today. He was an expert at guerilla warfare and self-defense”, Mr. Bhat said, adding that today's India is has a stronger defence thanks to measures taken by Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh under whose reign, the nation has witnessed a successful launch of the Agni V missile.
Mundod Dharmapal Jadhav, the chief speaker of the day, sharing his observations about Shivaji said that he dreamt of building a 'Hindu Samrajya'. Mr. Jadhav said that Shivaji's popularity has scaled greater heights today and appealed to the government to declare his birthday a holiday.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Dr. N S Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner, DK, Gulzar Banu, Mayor, Mangalore City Corporation, Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, Nagaraj Shetty, Chairman, Coastal Development Authority, were present among others.
