NRIs should get provision to vote online: Jayaprakash Hegde

Dubai, April 23: Newly elected Udupi-Chikmagalur MP K Jayaprakash Hegde, during his short visit to Dubai, urged NRIs to initiate a campaign for their rights to vote through the internet.

“It is apparent that every NRI cannot be expected to travel to his hometown just to caste his or her vote. I think in such a scenario, exercising franchise through secured technology via the internet would be the best alternative,” Mr Hegde said.

He was speaking at a programme organised by Praveen Shetty of Fortune Group of Hotels to felicitate him at Lotus Boutique Hotel on behalf of over 50 organizations from all over United Arab Emirates. He visited Dubai to participate in 'Chammana' programme organised by Bearys Forum on Friday April 20.

He promised to put in his best efforts to pursue the issue with the government and provide impetus to this campaign till the NRIs get the right to vote from their places of work.

'Expectations Galore, Constraint of Time'

“As I got elected through bypoll, I have only two years of term as MP. At least the last six months of every MP's term needs to be wholly dedicated towards preparing for the next election. In the remaining 18 months available to me, I will do everything within my command to address the problems of the people in my region. I am aware that the electorate has high expectations from me, and I will not let them down,” said Mr Hegde.

He further said, “I am under constant pressure from my own party workers who want me to attend victory celebrations and thanksgiving meetings, but I have politely declined this demand, duly asking them to go ahead and celebrate in my absence. If I begin to yield to these requests, the remaining term of my office will not be sufficient. I have begun visiting remote and far-flung areas of my constituency. In spite of time constraints, I could not turn down the invitation extended to me from my well-wishers in Dubai, as a large number of people from my constituency live here”, he said.


Praveen Shetty draped a shawl around the visiting dignitary. Sudhir Shetty and Shekhar Shetty handed over a citation to him, while Raj Shetty presented a memento. Before this, Ganesh Rai read out the citation.

Hegde recounted that he had begun his political carrier by joining Janata Dal in 1985. With the support of his people, he said he won the election for the first time and became a minister in 1994. “After the Janata Dal was divided, I kept my distance from political parties, and started to fight election as an independent candidate. The people also elected me twice as an independent candidate,” he recalled.

He said that he had to choose to join Congress party, after areas within his home constituency got trifurcated between different constituencies. “I continue to work for the people, and try to address their problems. I serve them not to win elections, but because of an inner urge to serve people,” he said.

Hegde regretted about casteism prevalent in the political system and elections in India. He urged the people here to convey a strong message back home to keep caste away from politics. “It is okay to use the name of one's caste in wedding and family functions, but in elections, caste, creed, religion etc should never be a factor,” he felt.

“NRIs are also an integral part of India. They also should get voting rights. Polling through postal ballots or embassy may not yield cent percent result. Voting online appears to be the best option, and a number of nations are already following this system,” Hegde added.

Mangalore Airport and Air India Express

UAE Exchange COO, Sudhir Shetty, who was also present at the programme, informed the audience that he had met Mangalore Airport director, and had learnt from him that DGCA officials have cleared all the formalities for giving international status to Mangalore Airport.

“Now it is only a matter of time before a formal announcement is made by the central government. Only after this announcement is made, will other airlines be able to fly to Mangalore,” he explained.

He was giving this information in reply to a question posed to Hegde about granting international status to Mangalore Airport.

Sudhir Shetty also expressed his concern to the MP about the poor service provided by Air India Express, particularly relating to delays in scheduled flights and high fare during peak seasons.

Sarvotham Shetty, who compered the programme, urged Hegde to streamline Air India Express's functioning, duly complaining that the airline does not seem to have any policies about fixing of air fare. “This airline makes a three-fold increase in air fare during June-July and December. How can it be called a budget airline?” he questioned.

Hegde promised to look into this issue immediately after returning to India.

Lotus Boutique Inauguration

Earlier in the day, Jayaprakash Hegde inaugurated 'Lotus Boutique' Hotel, run under Fortune Group headed by Praveen Shetty. The inaugural was conducted by lighting the lamp and cutting the ribbon.

Hegde, who wished every success to the group of hotels, also recalled about his association with Praveen Shetty in the past, and how Shetty had helped him to win his first election in 1994 with his active campaigning. He also hailed Shetty for his services to the people of Kundapur region back home.

BCF president, Dr B K Yusuf, Ramee Group chairman, Raj Shetty, Praveen Shetty and his wife, Jayaprakash Hedge's wife, Shobha Shetty, were present on the dais during the felicitation programme.

Mangaluru: Air India Express (AIE) has postponed its much-anticipated direct flight service between Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) and Singapore, citing low bookings. Passengers who had booked tickets for the inaugural flight scheduled for January 21 and subsequent dates have been notified of the cancellation through email.

In its email, AIE assured passengers of alternative travel arrangements, including connecting flight options between MIA and Singapore. However, the decision to delay the direct service has left travelers and travel agents disappointed.

An AIE official attributed the postponement to operational challenges but clarified that the airline has not abandoned plans for the route. “We are committed to starting the service, but there is no immediate confirmation on the new launch date,” the official stated. He further explained that sustaining a route requires consistent demand, and seasonal travel alone is insufficient to justify operations.

Another AIE representative admitted that the number of bookings for the inaugural flight was below expectations but declined to disclose specific figures.

Rajesh H Acharya, director of HQ Connections Pte Ltd in Singapore and coordinator of the Singapore Tuluver community, expressed his disappointment. Acharya, who has been advocating for a direct flight between Mangaluru and Singapore since 2017, said, “After years of effort, we finally convinced the airline to start this service, but it has now been deferred.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Acharya posted: "Did not expect such behavior from @AirIndiaX, now owned by @TataCompanies & @SIAirlines. If there are issues, travelers deserve to be informed well in advance. This decision needs investigation at the highest level."

The delay has raised questions among the travel community, with many hoping the airline will address these concerns and provide a clear timeline for the launch of the Mangaluru-Singapore direct flight.

Mangaluru: The Tannirbhavi beach stretch up to the forest department's Tree Park is on the brink of a remarkable transformation under the ‘One Beach, One Destination’ initiative. This ambitious project aims to elevate the beach into a top-tier tourist hotspot through comprehensive upgrades and strategic developments.

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP shared updates during a press briefing on Tuesday, revealing that fresh tenders have been floated for maintaining the main beach. The technical evaluation of tenders for the Tannir Bhavi Blue Flag Beach is nearing completion, with the financial bids set to open shortly. “We are pleased to see major players participating in the tender process,” the DC remarked.

For the main beach, the maintenance contract will span 10 years. Meanwhile, the Blue Flag Beach’s successful bidder will face a progressive financial model—starting with a Rs 50 lakh payment in the first year, escalating to Rs 2 crore by the 10th year, alongside a minimum 5% revenue share for the administration. “Upon completion of the development, the beach will feature continuous activities to enhance its appeal,” he added.

Approximately 90% of the beach’s development work is already complete. Eco-friendly initiatives such as waste management systems and solar installations are operational at the Blue Flag Beach. While entrance work by Mangaluru Smart City Limited is ongoing, the beach remains accessible to the public. Entry fees, set in accordance with Blue Flag guidelines, aim to support sustainable maintenance efforts.

The ‘Blue Flag’ certification represents a global standard in eco-tourism, ensuring clean bathing water, state-of-the-art amenities, safety measures, and sustainable development. Karnataka’s Padubidri and Kasarkod beaches are among the few in India to hold this prestigious certification.

Mangaluru Smart City Limited is spearheading the development of the 1.8-acre area, with an investment of approximately Rs 16 crore. Once completed, the Tannirbhavi Beach is expected to stand out as a vibrant and eco-friendly destination, drawing tourists and locals alike.

Mangaluru: Despite a reduction in the number of cybercrime cases in 2024 due to effective preventive measures and increased public awareness, the financial impact of cybercrimes in the Mangaluru Commissionerate was the highest this year. Over Rs 40.46 crore was lost, with Rs 9.32 crore frozen and Rs 2.55 crore released to the complainants, reported Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal.

Comparing years, the number of cybercrime cases at CEN Police Station decreased from 196 cases in 2023 to 72 cases in 2024. In total, CEN registered 313 cybercrime cases from 2022 to 2024, including 55 cases in 2022, 196 in 2023, and 62 in 2024. In contrast, other police stations reported 120 cybercrime cases during this period, with eight cases in 2022, 40 in 2023, and 72 in 2024.

The financial losses from cybercrimes in 2022 were Rs 61 lakh, with Rs 7 lakh frozen and Rs 6 lakh returned to victims. In 2023, the losses increased significantly, with Rs 9.83 crore lost, Rs 6.29 crore frozen, and Rs 1.17 crore released to complainants.

Cybercrimes were mainly investment frauds, accounting for 50% of the cases and around 75% of the total losses. A total of 67 cases of investment fraud led to a loss of Rs 30.3 crore in 2024. Other major cybercrime categories included digital arrest scams (25 cases, Rs 7.1 crore lost), job frauds (8 cases, Rs 1.2 crore lost), and matrimonial frauds (4 cases, Rs 60.4 lakh lost). Online shopping frauds resulted in Rs 5.9 lakh in losses from three cases, while share market frauds led to Rs 41.96 lakh in losses from five cases. Other frauds, including advertisement, KYC, and miscellaneous scams, caused additional losses.

The National Cyber Crime Reporting portal received 5,498 complaints, with 215 cases converted into FIRs. Arrests related to cybercrimes increased in 2023, particularly at other police stations. This year, 42 individuals were arrested for cybercrimes, with 15 from Karnataka and 27 from other states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

To combat cybercrime, 217 awareness programs were held across Mangaluru, targeting various sections of society. These programs were organized at the Police Station, Beat, Sub-division, and Commissionerate levels, helping spread awareness and prevent future crimes.
