The injured has been identified as M Raveendra (29), who had recently shifted his house from Urwa Stores to Kavoor.
Police have denied the possibility of involvement of the communal forces in the incident. They are of the suspicion that some old animosity between the miscreants and driver might be the reason for the attack.
Eyewitness said that the assailants, who arrived in a car, waylaid the auto-rickshaw near a bar in Kavoor and assaulted Raveendra with knife leaving severe injuries on his back and waist. The assailants fled the scene within a few seconds.
The incident occurred around 10:00 pm, when the driver was returning home after dropping a couple of passengers near the bar, sources said.
The local residents, who saw the driver lying on the road in a pool of blood, took him to a private hospital immediately for emergency treatment. Hospital sources on Wednesday said that he was out of danger.
Kavoor police are investigating the matter after registering a case.
