Christians accuse priest of cheating thousands

April 28, 2012

Mangalore, April 28: The sight outside Samruddhi Bhavan near Garody was of total chaos on Friday, as a group of people staged a protest against a religious head of Grace Ministry for allegedly cheating thousands of devotees of their hard earned money.

The protestors alleged that Fr Andrew Richard had collected funds in the name of holding different programs under his ministry.

Fr Andre holds a prayer service at Samruddhi Bhavan every week on Fridays. The prayer services were going on at the hall at the time of the protest.

One of the protestors, Shanthi Crasta said the religious head had collected money from all Christians who had participated in his prayer service.

She said he had promised to conduct various programmes to help the marginalized sections of society. He collected the money for himself and now owns many houses in the city and leads a luxurious life, she alleged.

Responding to the allegations, Fr Andrew clarified that he had not collected money with the intention of cheating anyone. “It must be someone else who is misusing my name, “he claimed.

He said the issue would be sorted out amicably at a meeting.
