Mangalore, April 28: The All India Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament organized by United Karnataka Chess Association (UKCA) under the aegis of All India Chess Federation was inaugurated in Mangalore on Saturday.

Speaking at the formal inaugural ceremony, M R Vasudeva, Honourary President, UKCA, said that the beauty of the game of chess is that even a child cannot be considered inferior. “It is the ignited mind that matters” he said.

M S Gururaj, President, UKCA, said that the Association has taken a bold step this year by doing away with below tournaments. “Only Open tournaments will be conducted this year as below tournaments limit the confidence of younger chess talents and deny them an opportunity to interact with seniors”, he said.

Out of the 10 tournaments scheduled for this year, 5 will be held in Mangalore, Mr. Gururaj revealed.

Participants from across the country are participating in the tournament which will go on till May 2
