Mangalore, May 2: Despite the ban imposed by the district administration on all types of manual scavenging, the manual cleaning of the underground drainage has continued unchecked in the city.
A media sting operation on Wednesday revealed two workers getting into a UGD to clear the block in two separate manholes in front of Lady Goschen Hospital near Town Hall.
However, when the photographers began to take pictures of manual scavenging, the two scavengers and the contractor of a nearby Sulabha toilet, who had made the duo to clean the manholes, fled the scene.
Mangalore City Corporation joint commissioner Srikanth Rao said that the contractor and the labourers were illegally cleaning the UGD manholes, as they were not supposed to open or clean it.
“Had they informed the MCC, we could have sent our jet sucker machine and equipment to clear the block in manholes scientifically,” he said.
He also said that the assistant engineer Ganesh has already been asked to provide a detailed report on the incident and a complaint would be filed with police against the contractor based on the report.
