Karwar, May 3: For persons were killed on spot and many others sustained injuries when the lorry by which they were travelling hit the retaining wall of a bridge on National Highway 17, overturned and fell into a gorge near Mirjan village in Kumta taluk on Wednesday.
The police gave the names of the victims as Riyaz (22) of Lakkundi, Jaibullah (46) of Gadag, and Basavaraj (42) and Gangavva (45) of Bailuru. The injured, Hanumanth, Kulasam Bi, and Amina Begum, have been admitted to the government hospital in Kumta.
All the victims, who hailed from Gadag district, were sitting on top of the lorry. According to a complaint filed by Hanumant Kavaluru of Gadag in Kumta police station, the lorry driver drove the vehicle in a haphazard way and hit the Jaddikatte bridge.
The lorry, going to Kumta from Ankola, was carrying vegetables. The truck driver, Dyamanna, fled the spot.
