Mangalore, May 5: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old labourer jumped to death from the seventh floor of a private hospital in the city on Friday.
The deceased is Shivamani Vittal (30), a native of Bagalkot and a resident of Lingappaiah Colony in Mulky. He was staying the A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences since last four days taking care of his wife, who was being treated for a complication related to her pregnancy.
According to hospital authorities, Mr. Vittal approached a psychiatrist of the hospital on Thursday and sought treatment for a psychiatric aliment. The doctor had asked him to come with a family member and get admitted for treatment on Friday.
On Friday morning, he had breakfast with his wife in the general ward located on the second floor of the institute's building. Construction work was going on at the sixth and seventh floor of the building. Workers doing the centring work on the sixth floor informed that they saw Mr. Vittal going to the sixth floor and chatting with a few workers around 10 a.m.
He jumped from the seventh floor when the workers had proceeded for tea to the stall outside the institute. Those doing the painting work on the building in front of the institute's building were witness to Mr. Vittal's act.
The hospital authorities said Mr. Vittal had severe head and leg injuries. He died of injuries around 11 a.m.
