Udupi, May 9: The Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation (KMDC) Ltd. has implemented schemes worth Rs. 237.5 crore in the past three years and 10 months, benefiting 1.45 lakh people in the State, said its Chairperson N B Aboobakkar.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, he said that under the Swavalambana margin money scheme, Rs. 20.27 crore had been given to 13,602 beneficiaries. Under Arivu scheme, subsidised loans to the tune of Rs. 71.56 crore had been provided to 40,642 students from minority communities. A sum of Rs. 43.78 crore had been given to 31,867 beneficiaries under Shrama Shakti scheme. As many as 46,865 beneficiaries had been given Rs. 40.46 crore under Micro Assistance scheme. Under Ganga-Kalyana scheme, the corporation had provided Rs. 52.27 crore to 5,621 beneficiaries.

Mr. Aboobakkar said the corporation had provided Rs. 4.14 crore to 541 beneficiaries under lift irrigation scheme, and Rs. 3.09 crore as micro loans to flood-affected people.

The previous governments used to allocate Rs. 20 crore to Rs. 35 crore for the Minorities Welfare Department annually. But after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in the State, there had been a massive increase in the allocation to the department. The BJP government allocated Rs. 128.98 crore to the department in 2008-09, Rs. 173.73 crore in 2009-10, Rs. 269.26 crore in 2010-11, and Rs. 326 crore in 2011-12. The government had provided Rs. 406 crore to the department for 2012-13, he said.

The previous governments used to allocate between Rs. 10 crore and Rs. 14 crore to the KMDC annually. But there had been an increase in the allocation to the KMDC after the BJP came to power in the State.

Mangaluru, Sep 19: Following the recent Nipah virus-related fatalities in Kerala, health authorities in Dakshina Kannada are taking proactive measures to monitor for potential cases of monkey fever. While typically found in African countries, monkey fever has raised concerns within the district, prompting increased vigilance.

To ensure early detection, travelers arriving at Mangaluru’s international airport and local ports will undergo health screenings. Additionally, a dedicated ambulance has been placed on standby for any emergent cases, and Wenlock Hospital has set aside a special ward with six reserved beds specifically for monkey fever patients.

"We currently have no confirmed cases of monkey fever in Dakshina Kannada, and there are no direct orders from the state government," said Dr. Timmaiah, the District Health Officer. "However, we are taking preventive measures, including continuous screening of incoming passengers. A special meeting is also being planned to discuss future action steps."

Dr. Timmaiah further highlighted the rise in general viral infections following the region's recent shift in weather patterns. "With the decline in rainfall, we are seeing an uptick in viral cases, particularly fevers accompanied by cough, cold, and throat pain, especially in children. Though Mangaluru has experienced mostly sunny weather, occasional rain at night has contributed to the spread of illnesses. It’s crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures."

Health officials are urging residents to seek timely medical advice and follow recommended precautions to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.
