Udupi, May 23: Former Shimoga MP K G Shivappa (70) passed away after a prolonged illness at the Adarsh Hospital here on Tuesday. He was severely injured in a car accident at Kumsi in Shimoga district in December 2010 following which he was hospitalised in Bangalore and later in Udupi.
Shivappa was elected to Lok Sabha as a Congress candidate from Shimoga constituency in 1991 by defeating the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who was president of Bharatiya Janata Party State unit then. Shivappa, who again contested the Lok Sabha election in 1996 as Congress candidate was humbled by the former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He was also a relative of the former Chief Minister late S. Bangarappa and father-in-law of the former Karkala MLA and BJP leader V. Sunil Kumar. Shivappa is survived by wife, two daughters and a son. Minister for Primary and Second Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat visited the hospital to offer their last respects.
His body was later taken to his native village Kodkani in Sorab taluk. The former Minister Kumar Bangarappa and Mr. Sunil Kumar were at the cremation.
The last rites were performed at Tyagarti village, near Sagar in Shimoga district on Tuesday evening. Among those present in Sagar were Sorab MLA H. Halappa, the former MLAs G.D. Narayanappa and Swamy Rao.
