Mangalore, May 25: Residents of Melukoppala-Athrebail and representatives of various organisations on Friday held a demonstration demanding removal of Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda for his action that led to the arrest of activist Vidya Dinker and four others on Thursday.
Activist Madhukar Amin said false cases were filed against the activists and pressure them to move away their fight against acquisition of land for the Special Economic Zone. There was no need for a Deputy Commissioner who was supporting forceful acquisition of land, he said. Advocate Dinesh Hegde Ulepady said the Deputy Commissioner had acted against the public cause by filing a complaint leading to the arrest of Ms. Dinker and four others. He asked people to come forward for the support of people such as Ms. Dinker, who was fighting for rights of people affected because of the Special Economic Zone.
Democratic Youth Federation of India district unit president Muneer Katipalla said the DYFI would continue with a campaign seeking transfer of Mr. Gowda.
