Mangalore, May 26: Former president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat Khalid Yusuf died after he met with an accident on National Highway 75 near Adyar Katte, here on Saturday afternoon.
The accident occurred within a few seconds after 70-year-old Yusuf boarded his scooter to return home after finishing his grocery shopping.
As he slowly entered the highway a speeding Maruti Ritz car rammed into his scooter, eye witnesses said.
A critically injured rider Yusuf was rushed to a private hospital in the city for emergency treatment. However he breathed his last without responding to any treatment.
Yousuf, who enjoyed support of senior Congress leaders was elected three times as member of Taluk Panchayat and chosen as its president in 1995. He also served as the president of Kannur Juma Masjid for 26 years.
Congress leaders Vinay Kumar Sorake, Ramanath Rai, U T Khader, Ivan D'Souza and others visited the hospital to pay their last respects.
Yusuf is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter and a large number of relatives and friends.
A case has been registered at Mangalore Rural Police Station.
