Mangalore, May 27: The current annual grants being given to the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy by the state government are inadequate and hence it must increase the amount to a minimum of Rs. 2 crore, said C S Krishna Setty, President of the Academy.
Addressing media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Sunday Mr. Setty said that there is a need to increase the amount of honourary awards presented to artists to a minimum of Rs. 50,000. “At present the award money is only Rs.10,000. Besides, the annual art presentation prize money must be increased from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000. A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the government”, he said.
Mr. Setty also said that after consultations with other members of the Academy, a proposal will also be sent to the government to rechristen Karnataka Lalithakala Academy to Karnataka Visual Arts Academy.
A committee would be formed to act as a watchdog of the Academy to keep guiding the office bearers, he added.
