Kasargod, June 2: A Kasargod based man was arrested by authorities of Mumbai Airport for evading duty on saffron and gold billet.
The accused has been identified as Mohammed Niaz (32), a resident of Nellikunje in near here. Saffron and gold billets of aggregate value of over Rs 7 lakh have been seized from him.
He had arrived in Mumbai from Dubai by an Air India flight on May 29 and walked through the green channel and exited at the airport. He was not replying up to the mark to the officials. The air customs intelligence authorities found something suspicious about him and intercepted him and questioned him.
When his baggage was investigated, they found 4.25 kgs of saffron, expected to fetch Rs 3.48 lakh, and gold billets of 117 gms worth Rs 3.30 lakh, which he failed to declare at the customs.
A thorough investigation into the case is being held by the authorities in Mumbai.
